Thats weird as Hell? I know you can put it back down manualy with the little screw on the HL motor.
Sounds like a short or a grounded out wire? IDK?

When my headlight motor gear broke (common problem), it also broke off one of the plastic ***** that acts as the stop for the headlight mechanism. You should be able to see these ***** that limit the travel of the lifting arms by lifting the hood and looking down between the headlight motors and the headlights.

I ended up fabricating a new replacement metal stop that I bolted into place using the existing motor bolts. Like I said, this happened at the same time that my headlight motor gear stripped, so I also had to order a new brass gear to fix the motor.

The grinding noise is the unmistakable sound of a broken headlight motor gear. You need to take out the motor and take it apart to confirm, then order a new brass gear kit. There is a sticky here somewhere with the description of this problem.

When the motor gear wears it has been know to make the headlights do all sorts of strange and wonderful things, including what you describe.

Before pulling it apart, try the 180* trick...
Pull off the actuator arm, rotate the motor 180* with the manual ****, then reinstall the actuator arm. I did it on mine over 2 years ago and its still going strong.
