you do it the same way people have been doin it since the 50's. remove everything including the intake. ( heads too if you're rebuilding the motor ) then undo the mounts and tranny mount. Also, the front fascia will have to be removed, unless you have a stupid long cherry picker. ( the average picker will require the front fascia removed )

It will come out from the top, mine did
Didn't take the facia off
Took everything off the front of the motor (waterpump, balancer, etc)
But when I put it back in, the motor was completely assembled
It will work, take your time

Working from the bottom is easy and you can do it without a lift - it's like six bolts on the frame and 8 on the top suspention . . . .plus it gives you the chance to clean up both the k frame and engine bay - http://www.michiganspeed.com/enginepull/index.html check this tutorial out.

yea it will. but it takes so much less time to come out of the bottom, the way it was designed to.

I pulled mine out from the top with the tranny with a JEGS cherry picker. Not fun by any means but it was my first time ever pulling a motor and it worked. It went back in the same way too. Just take off all your accessories. LABEL EVERYTHING! I cant even describe how much that helps lol.

i have never removed an engine but if u are doing it out of ur garage like i would be... the top just sounds 100x more safe... even if it a PITA i'd rather be safe...

I pulled mine from the bottom and the top before. Through the bottom is way easier and it took less time.

Anyone use the happy hooker from TPiS, its supposed to help pulling from the top a ton.
Also if your just pulling the motor (no tranny) would the top be so bad?

cool, thanks soo much guys. i really appreciate all of the input. i am probably going out the top now. im probably gonna do it at work b/c we have everything i could ever need including an extremely long cherry picker. sometimes i guess it pays to work at a dealership! i figure it should only take 2 to 3 hours to pull and it should be easy to diagnose as well bc it is either a skirt or a wrist pin for sure. i just pulled the belt and ran the car and its still knocking so i guess its gotta come out. thanks as always guys and keep the tips coming guys, anything helps.

Um... no it aint.

You dont have to pull barely ANYTHING to lift the car off the motor..

but to pull the motor out the top... tons of **** has to come off first plus you have to take out bell housing bolts and flywheel bolts and and and the list goes on

Out the bottom for the quickest and least painful way of extracting the motor...
It is how it was designed.

If you have a lift going out the bottom is way easier, I have done it both ways. Pull the radiator and fans, disconnect the A/C lines, disconnect the brake lines to the ABS unit, disconnect the ABS sensor connectors at each wheel, unhook throttle cable and cruise cables, power booster vac line, unbolt the exhaust from the cat converter, pull the driveshaft and plug the trans, disconnect the 3 connectors behind the pass kick panel and pull them out to the engine compartment, drop the trans crossmember, remove 6 K member bolts, 4 sway bar mounting bolts, and then the 8 strut bolts. The front springs are captured and will not go flying anywhere (my concern when first doing a removal from the bottom)..lift the car body and you can roll out the complete K member, engine, trans, wiring harness, and exhaust up to and including the cat converter. Painless and can be done easily in a couple hours.

Assemble everthing on the k-member and drop the car back on it, and just work backwards
