Did you make sure to put the pin thats on the back of the opti back in the hole on the cam gear? Sounds like it's mis aligned, causing your timing to be way off!

It's only supposed to go on one way but wth a little bit of force you can put it on wrong by misaligning the splines. Check your wires. Where did you get your opti from and what kind is it?

Im sorry I meant to say spline! I think you new what I was saying though. Anyways, I put mine on wrong the first time I changed the opti and had the same problem you are describing. Took it back off, put it back on carefully and it was fine. Also it was the only thing you changed and if it didnt act like that before, then that pretty much answers you question. Maybe I'm wrong...

Brand new gm unit, msd, or what. If you bought anything other than these two options you made a mistake. Also I just fixed my 92 gmc truck, it had a bad pick-up coil on the distributor. So I yanked it and fixed the pick up coil and put the distributor back in and fired it up. It was running like it had a cam with a big nasty lope and would die. Realizing I put the distributor in wrong, I pulled the distributor back out. Then I turn the motor over to find tdc on cyl.1. Put the distributor back in with the rotor pointing towards one, and it runs like new again. Point being that it easy to put the opti or a distributor in wrong, even if you have done it a few times. So Im going to say opti is installed wrong or is bad. Also is your car throwing any codes?

Check all your plug wires and make sure they aren't cut or arcing, get your ignition control module and coil tested at a parts store for free. Start narrowing it down because it sound like a miss to me.

I just looked in my hanes manual and 95 later have pin drive opti(vented), thats why I refered to as a pin. You have a spline type opti(non-vented). I think the splined ones are easier to install incorrectly. Someone verify this!

I still think it has to do with the wires as long as the opti that you bought really was new and you didn't get ripped off.

Make sure they are all routed to the correct plug and spot on the opti, no cuts or tears either. Start the car at night and look at all your plugs and wires and see if you can see them arcing. It will look like little sparks coming from the wire.

I don't know if this matters on an Opti or not, but SBC firing order is 18436572. Maybe your Ignition Control Module (that thing with the heatsink) took a crap on you.

He can get the ICM and the coil tested at almost any auto parts store. If their both good I'll bet the opti was junk, like maybe an ebay one the guy decided he didn't want.

not really, if you actually LOOK when you change them, either is pretty dummy proof. alot of people are aggravated when they get in there, and just kind of stick it on. it only goes on one way easily, and i slightly rotate it on the block before i bolt it down. you can feel the opti and block scraping together without having to push it against it. the splined style has a flat spot that lines up.

(to the poster) first off i would verify that you have the firing order correct. it is VERY easy to cross up wires on an LT1 due to the fact you cant really see the wires to the plugs, you kind of have to feel. going with the others, i would check coil next, icm usually is a last resort check for me. i have usually narrowed the misfires to the coil, opti, or burned wires.

Whats my ignition control module and where is it located .... and i did pull the wires and put them back on so i no its not them and now my car wont even start i checked the wires and tryed to start it again and it wouldnt and it would only slighty run if i hold my gas pedal all the way down but it might only run a second.... when i first got it all back togeather it would run for a couple seconds if i would mess with the gas ....sound like anything?
