I got the "clunk" sound years ago with my 3rd gen. It was the TQ arm mounting point on the tranny. It came loose and was clunking when I hit the brakes and when I hit the gas... Sounded HORRIBLE... I didn't know what it was when it happened so, I thought something serious came apart underneath. put it back in place with a new bushing and good as new.

Default about the clunking..

i have the same sound... but it also does it when shifting into drive or reverse from park or neutral sometimes... and on downshifts sometimes.... but not when i step on it.. i bought a prothane trans mount, new performance u joints from summit, and put a new tq arm on (spohn rear crossmember mount) .. and the sound is still there.. im not sure if it will work.. but someone told me to tighten the pinion bolt above the rear of the driveshaft.. i havent gotten to it yet.. but most of the people that have this problem have aftermarket gears it seems, i have 3.73s also... so who knows?

Check the bolts on the torque arm and the lower control arms. Some of the companies but metric bolts in the control arms and the holes are for standard bolts or so I have heard. I have a very light clunk in my car and it has been there since before I replaced the rear with a 9" all the rear suspension sub frames drive shaft etc. It is not the trans mount either. Its not very bad but annoying that its still there. I think mine might be a bit of slack in the rear end gears as I get gear whine on decel.

Trans or TQ arm mount, most likely trans mount.

check the transmission mount first and then go from there. i've been through two of them and they both sounded like what you described when broken.

check your pinion nut and make sure it isn't comming loose. i think its a mount that is torn but not seperated, but i had a pinion nut start coming loose on me one time and it was pretty similiar in sound.

I doubt it's the trans. mount guys, based on what he's telling us. He said it only clunks on light throttle. I don't know about you all, but when mine was broken the harder I hit it the more it clunked.
