i think OBD2 gave it the jump.

96 and 97 both have OBDII

I also thought 96 and 97 both had two cats?

Think about it because exhaust from each side of the motor has a cat to go through instead of both sides forcing themselves into 1 cat.

At least thats the idea behind why GM did it but in all reality a LT1 is a LT1 is a LT1. Same thing with the Corvette being rated higher. True they had dual exhaust but they are all the same.

ye the single cat isnt really a restriction but the end of the y pipe is a ball flange and prolly has a 2 inch diameter hole..very restrictive...

The 561 heads also flow better than earlier castings but I'm not sure if that had any affect on it.

Marketing gave it 10 more HP, but they could blame it on the cats.

. Doesn't matter how long they keep the pipes separated. The fact that is goes down to one pipe restricts the car big time.

Hate to think it but honestly I think GM just bullshitted the public to get more people to buy them. Think about it, they new the LS1 was around the corner and this was the final push to get the most $ they could out of the LT1 cars. Companies play games.

the cams in 96-97 were slightly more aggressive as well, can't give you exact numbers. This plus the exhaust tweaks are what caused the gain

Most LT1 cars dyno the same regardless of year. The production tolerances were varied enough to negate any real HP differences IMO>
