If your factory pin is the long pin then you pull them both out of the cams and swap

The only way I've found to pull the pin reliably is to hold the cam in your hands with a towel, take the cam to a bench vice, clamp down on the pin, twist the cam and pull and eventually the pin is out.

New pin goes in with hammer but don't mash down the head of the pin. If the pin looks to be a bit mashed just grind it into proper shape.

Make sure the pin is not too long now. Too long is worse than too short.

Does anyone have the actual spec for dowel pin length for both early and late style cams?

Might be able to remove the pin with a slide hammer. I changed cam pins with the cam in the motor by grabbing the pin with vice grips. The then put a pry bar between the vice grips a solid surface and tapped the pry bar with a hammer to back out the pin. Wasn't fun but it worked.
