it has similar advertised duration as the CC306 cam but 12 degrees more at .050" on the intake and 4 more on the exhaust.

It will want to rev up for sure. its not hard to see that. the only thing good about this cam is that its aggressive ramps will build lowend power/torque over the cc306 cam, making it possible to run such a large cam yet retain lowend power for driveability.

If there are ppl using this cam on a 383-396 and taking it over 6500rpms, its common sense that it will rev out near 7K on a 350

Would I be wrong in saying that the opti too doesn't like the high rpms? Iv'e done a lot of reading and a little talking with the guys at the shop. It seems those last 500 rpm seem to be hit or miss as far as the opti lasting. There are some tricks though, so maybe this is a moot point. Then again, maybe not. What's the opinion on this?

It is usually the rotor grenading itself, but the MSD cap and rotor can hold much higher rpms. When placed side by side w/ the stocker it is a much more stout piece. I personally suggest the OEM opti portion with the MSD cap/rotor for most street/strip builds. When installed correctly and vented it should last quite some time.

Looks like this thread is getting beat on pretty good, but I enjoyed reading it.
IVe been looking at these comp cams cam 292 XFI's... Im ready to buy a cam for my forged 383ci 11.3:1cr lt1. Im currently turning it to 5800-6000, but have reved it to 6500 in the past few months with no ill effect.

Im currently running a cc305, with 1.6rr's with a pair of stock aluminum lt1 castings that were ported and polished.
Im going to buy a cam, and got word from comp cams, but the response I got seemed more like greek, and that they cited a part number that didnt appear to go with an lt1, but on older version sbc.

Anyway, I dont want to rev it much past 6500.
Will this cam (292) perform better in my application, or is the 290, or 280versions better?

This car is used for some dd activities, but more geard for hpde/roadrace and track events. Running 93 octane.

I understand that the valve train needs more help, Ive got some upgraded springs that work fine with the 1.6rr's and the cc305.

Any thoughts or suggestions are always appreciated.
Dan

maybe you should go with the slightly smaller cam the 280XFI, i have it in my car, with full exhaust, stock castings that are ported and a valve job with the bowls blended and a TB and it made 389rwhp on the dyno tuned, just a thought if u are hesitating with the 290xfi, check out a step down from it.
