Default Ram Air vs K&N

So I got a ram air hood for christmas and Im wondering if I should go find an airbox setup to use the ram air or just get a k&n intake setup.

get the air box it is cleaner looking and as far as function you cannot get a better, straight air flowing cai than that!
roadtrip
merv
injuneer
streetwarrior and a few others have no complaints thus far with the setup

Been proven time and again the CAI is a better method, as cool as ram air would be

err... no.

The airbox/ramair style is generally considered to be better than the LT1 style CAI.

I don't know if either one has "been proven time and again" better, but if so it certainly isn't the CAI over the ramair style airbox.

maybe over the SS lt1 style but definately not the Lt1 ws6 style.with all due respect,
i don't see how anyone would believe a cold air set up would get more air than this

I read plenty of times that the CAI makes more horsepower on the dyno but, the ram air gives better ET results.(Ram air).It is sort of like forced induction. So, you make less horsepower on a dyno but, more horsepower with the more MPH you are traveling.

Uncorking my dirty K&N cai from the TB while still on the dyno only gave less then 3 rwhp more then the whole thing connected in back to back dyno runs. Was 2.4hp or so IIRC. The car was never taken off the rollers or anything, and was ran within seconds of the prior run - just to see if the intake was a restriction.

With results so close to an open TB(within margin of error), I cannot see any room for improvement unless you were very large cubes. A stock cube LT1 just doesnt breathe enough air to make a FIPK a restriction - and that is with ported heads, intake, and a healthy custom cam. I bet with a brand new filter there would be maybe 1hp different - an altogether insignificant number when talking about dyno hp.

Of course this doesn't account for any "ram air" effects it may have, but that has always been difficult to test and results are debatable.

thats cool.
that is the reason i do not waste time on dyno's it's real hard to race on them.the dyno cannot simulate 100+ mph of air forcing its way 12" to the manifold...
i have many dyno day friends, the track is the way..
the picture i used belongs to injuneer(Fred)

Any airbox will work, you'll just need a different coupler to attach it to the box and the TB.

I thought I had read a study that claimed you would need to be going in excess of 100 mph to get any Ram Air effect. I guess it might depend on the design of the hood and intake. I think the location of the Camaro SS intake is kind of in a dead spot.

Well I was talking more power, not better ETs. And I've read here MANY times that the CAI makes more power than any of the Ram Air setups. Never read anything about track results, so I can't comment on that.

Ram Jets need to do like Mach 7 though But that's a whole different story. They are using the speed to compress the air and gas to make it spontaneously combust

400 mph? So, it would take at least 5-6 seconds before you could tell any difference.

I feel quite a boost at about 3-325mph myself.

humm idk but ill tell you this, i do custom paint and body for a living, and i had taken my hood off my 96 ws6 so i could straighten it out( factory hoods are extremly wavy) and shoot some primer on it.

Anyway, my mustang was down due to a tie rod that broke in my driveway ( thank god) so i had to drive the bird to work one day with no hood...

There is a really straight highway comming home from my gym after work and nobody is ever on it,anyway a modded S2000 pulls up next to me, and wants to run it, so we start going through the gears, my car was definatly sucking in some serious air, and honestly sounded like a supercharger at around 4800rpm.. anyway i put a few lengths on the kid, and he kept trying to give me the ricer fly by, so i just stuck in it, and burried the speedo, the highways ends and we slow down and go our seperate ways, but i pulled over to feel the intake, and the whole motor was just freezing from going through the air so fast... Now i know this doesnt really have to do alot with which is better, but i cut the baffles out of my ramair hood, and i put it back on and it still definatly is getting plenty of nice cold air, something i dont think a fender mounted one would get... bottom line is the way the lt1 ramair is mounted, its not going to make power on the dyno without the cold air going through it

If the CAI was superior as far as feeding the engine cooler air, why is it that Ls1s have the similar style air intake as the ram air ws6 Lt1 and TPI Z's and vettes.......?
Performance wise i do not care what the dyno says that is not where i drive!

Dyno is for tuning, not for telling which CAI is going to get you down the 1/4 mile faster.

Why not run both?
