Default guideplate install ?

might be a dumb question but im getting ready to install these GM guideplates on my motor, they seem like they have play when the bols are loose, is there any certain way I have to tighten these down because it seems like I can move it back or forward a little bit so any answers would be good. Thanks

YES!! I had a problem with mine. Make sure there the furthest down (towards the headers). Mine were too high and my pushrod would hit it causing a tapping sound resulting in me buying all sorts of new parts what all that was the problem was my guideplates were off. So just pull them down all the way and tighten them up.. done! If ya need a hand let me know, iv done my valvetrain like 500 times and can do them blind folded!!

Well I'm a newb myself man. I'm actually in the same boat. Just got a cam from bauer and buying the remaining parts to properly run it.

Anyways I know they sell checkers. Here's one from Custom SSI. This is the one I went with.

no my motor is still hydro, I just need one solid lifter to check for length becasue these ones bleed down too much with the dual springs. does adding guide-plates usually effect the length of the pushrod since you are rasing that stud up around an 1/8th of an inch because other than that its a stock deck height and only a light resurfacing on the heads...

I had to buy 7.150's for my car. I have a PR checker and you have to see where the roller tip is on the top of the valve. Lip stick would work good. Put lipstick on the tip of the valve and adjust your rocker to 0 lash and turn your motor over and see where the roller tip was on the valve. If its more towards the outside (header side) then you need shorter ones. You want all the movement in the most center part of the valve as poss. I have 1.6 rockers with a .595 lift cam and i needed 7.150 pushrods with my guideplates. Hope this helps!

yea I have that one also, seems like my 7.2's are a little long and the 7.150 is centering better but its hard to get a accurate reading with the hydralic lifters.

When you checked for length did you only set the valve to zero lash and not add preload or did you add preload too??

yea thats how I did mine and I had my new LS7 lifters soaking for a while so they worked pretty good, I ended up checking them about 5 times today and went and bought 7.150's.

how much play is acceptable with length, they are leaving marks very close to the center of the valve but not directly in it, will this be ok? or do I need shorter ones still.

Youll be fine. Thats where my are. I know theres a lot of ppl on here with bigger cams that still run stock length so with ours being .050 shorter were even better off! I wouldnt worry bro.

switched out my hotcam for something a little better, basically everything in the valvetrain is new, had heads decked, port matched with the intake and a good valve job and a dual spring, switched to nsa pro-mags, with arp studs, also put in a melling select oil pump while the pan was off, 30lb ford racing injectors, and took off my loudmouth and fabbed up a x-pipe with dynomax bullets...still need to go to ion to have it tuned.
