I had some thoughts of going to a 4000 stall on my LT1, is that too big?

I am thinking of going with a bigger cam also, if that makes any difference.

4000 would be way to big for your setup...anything that you plan on using as a daily driver or street car, id never go bigger than a 3400..but thats my opinion.

It isnt my everyday driver, I get most of my mileage at the drag strip. Hey 95Lwind05 I see that you have a MadZ28 tune, does your car run really rich after having it tuned??

4000 would be real nice, only listen to those who drive stalled cars because people who dont just assume 3600 or 4000 is too big but they have no idea. My friends thought I was crazy putting a 3600 in my car but I sure shut them up when I gave them a ride and it drove almost as tame as stock. My Yank SS3600 with 3.73's drives pretty stock around town and its my DD, I would have gotten the 4000 except I plan to run Nitrous so the 3600 is better for me. Dont hesistate to go big, you will just wish you would have if you dont.

4000 is not too big for a weekend warrior. I run a Coan 4k stall with my bolt on LT1. Works great.

4k is definately not too big. I'd say 5500 is my max (ridiculous off the line).

4000 isnt to big, but you need a converter that will work good with your setup. decide what plans you have for the car and choose a stall based off of that.

Give a converter manufacturer a call. What I forgot in my other post is what rpm do you shift at and what rear gears do you have or plan to run? That decides alot because if you shift at only 6k and have 3.73's, a 4000 would have too high of a shift extension for that so you would want to go lower like a 3600, so it would help if you post that.

I had a Yank 3600 in my LT1 with a hotcam and I did not like it on the street, so I traded for a VIG 2800 which I liked a lot better. I may have lost .1 in the quarter mile. I'm not sure a 2800 stall was the best fit for my car, but it was available when I pulled my tranny. I still was able to run 12.4s with the VIG. I could have done better if I had known I had bad springs at the time.....I did not find that out until I dynoed my car with an M6 in it.

some people like big stalls, some like small stalls. some people like stalls that will hit harder, others do not. it really depends on your tastes. if possible try and find someone who has a big stall in their car and ride/drive it, then decide. I had NEVER been in a car with a big stall. when I put my LE3 383 in my firebird along with a TCI SSF3500 I loved it a lot even though the torque of the 383 pushed my stall speed up to about 4,000 rpm. Now with my current build I'm going with a yank PT4000 stall. I have a radical cam though and it will be a drag car, not to mention I have extremely high tolerance.

what cam are you going with?

actually when i had it dynoed they said its 17% rich? not to mention my dyno #'s arent even close to where they should be.

I dont know what it is, but after it was tuned it is awful rich. I have tried to lean it out with a fuel pressure regulator, and still it didnt help. It has to be in the tune.

I ran a Vig 3600 for 12 years with my combo...I just had it restalled to a 4000 and it feels damn good with my combo...Ideally you want your stall to be 500-900 rpm below your torque peak of the motor for a street strip set up...This is when a dyno is helpful...My peak is at 5000 and Vicki at PI steered me more towards the 4000 because I do lots of street driving...

So far, so good...Its very efficient and feels great and hits hard...and it doesn't feel like a loose converter at all...

I also run a 4000 coan, but I have the 8" race converter and I absoletely love it. It drives MUCH MUCH better than my old pt4000, but does hit softer. On the streets though it worked very well, and I've gone 1.56 60ft's on it with the turbo setup on a narrow tire.
