Head & Cam Price?
1300 might get you a completely stock rebuild with ALL stock components if you do the installation. But you said you were upgrading the heads/cam (that's what I took as a "premium long block"). No way that is happening for 1300.
1300 dollars will not get you any where even for a mild combo...if you look around usually head work is around 1500-2000 for some nice heads..that could be with a cam or not. You have to make sure you have enough money for machine work for the block if anything needs to be done to it. Also if you get higher flowing heads you need to port match and port the intake to fully maximize the head and cam work. You might have taken infinitebird the wrong way, but most of the people on here try to steer you in the right direction.
im doing mine for around 2500 for an le1 h/c(1100), SP Forged Pistons(300), Forged Rods(200)Polished Crank(50), my block bored 30 over(100)(tuned 100)(lifters, 1.6 rrs(400) timing kit(100), ARP Rod Bolts, Clevite Bearings...
Rings?
Rebalancing?
Gaskets?
This is going to cost you more than $2500 all said and done.
You can not do a QUALITY shortblock for $1300 corners will be substantially cut somewhere. A well done shortblock machineing and assembly will likely cost that without the parts.
Could you polish a turd a little and improve on the stock setup some, sure, but you are not going to make big changed like boreing and quality forged parts and come in that cheap.
A $200 forged rod might even go out of round just trying to check bearing clearances because they have not been stress relieved before machining.
You said in your original post you wanted prices on the machine shop doing it. Now you say you can do it yourself? Are you a ****** ***? Don't come on here insulting long time members when they're telling you the truth. You are NOT getting a LONGBLOCK with aftermarket heads and cammed for 1300 dollars, SORRY!

if you pull & install the longblock yourself but have a shop swap the heads & cam alone, you're still looking at an arm & a leg. plus the cost of the cam, springs, heads, etc. that's why many guys here are still stock cam & heads. I've never priced it before but it won't be cheap. if I were you I'd look into selling your longblock and buying a longblock that's already built like you want.
and i want to appologize to infinitebird cause that comment wasnt directed at him i was talkn to 96 caprice cause it seemed like everything i would say he would comeback and diss. on whatever i said.
Personally I would expect around 3k-4k just for top end (note this is including cam as well), if your talking them doing the work and parts I would expect around another 1k to 1,500 cause of labor and installion charges. That is what a local dyno shop charges. For the above prices that to me would have AFR heads, and complete cam package with everything that your would need. Thunder racing has cam packages for 800-900 bucks and AFR heads are right around 2k so, ya your looking at a lot so right there is about 3k and you may be a little over these prices but it shoul be around in that general area of cost for you. I would personally do as much as I can myself. Hope this helps OP.

i might end up just goin w/ a rebuilt motor from that City Motor Supply. they rebuild em to factory specs and then just put on some bolt ons cause i didnt think that a head-cam combo would be so much. they advertise $1300.00 for a long block

If the OP wants someone to do it for him, then the charges will rack up quick. Sounds to me he needs to stay a bolt on car considering its his DD. You are right though Devin, the charges add up real quick.
if you did the work your self $1300 for a long block (like you said) would be good deal. but even if the long block was that much youll still end up spending money for other stuff like coolant, maybe spark plugs, wires, possible waterpump, gaskets, and just incase you break a sensor while doing the swap. It would be a good idea to have $4-5 grand before you start. going to factory spec would be the cheapest. but if you want cam/head plan on spending. $4-5 grand if you do it yourself. add about $3 grand if you have someone do the work. doing something like this is for people that plan to keep the car, if you plan to sell. dont go threw with it.
The prices ive mentioned what we charge at my work. (chevy dealership)

3-4k for heads and cam? What a rip, advanced induction and LE both have heads/cam packages for around 2k with EVERYTHING done, just gotta put em on the car and you're lookin at 400 at the wheels give or take.

What I really ment was just the heads, like then RR's, rods, etc,etc and then a cam of your choice, with the install. If I am wrong about the heads let me know cause I looked LT1/LT4 heads on their website and I seen 2k for their heads, and I didn't know it came as a package. I was also saying a total install as well of theses parts, cause my local dynoshop charges a rate of 75 bucks per hour. Hey this is where I got that heads price

Been a few guys who got pissed off at my responses in the past only to later PM me asking for help fixing the mistake they made in ignoring the experianced guy
. Good luck, you will sure as hell need it.
chaves885, consider $2000 for heads and cam but then add say $120 for pushrods, $50 for studs $50 for Isky adjustable guideplates, intake porting/angle milling $3-400, rockers $260, $100 in gaskets, maybe $175-200 for core heads, shipping parts back and forth another $50, $100+ tuning. $3000 can happen in a hurry once you consider everything.
Have not even talked about headers/gears/CAI, stall and shift kit, where applicable, and all the other supporting mods.
What I am seeing from you is you are likely quite young and still need to make some major screwups before you will calm down and listen.
