11.2:1 396 and 847 cam
Ok guys I need your opinions on this. I am going with a VRE 396 SB with Pro dart LT1 heads and thinking an 847 cam with 1.6 RRs. Now do you guys think that this would be a good performing motor? I have 3.73s in the rear and the trans is going to be built.
Just opinions on this please.

Not to mention that you will have to get a small base circle cam if you run h-beams. So I guess +1 more on the custom grind. But as to the performance in question, with a simular custom cam on that set up, it should be mean as all heck.

My goals are whatever the car puts down to the ground and whatever times it runs in the 1320. I am not setting any goals to be disappointed in the end. The Intake will be ported. Anyways thanks guys. I will go ahead and see about the custom grind cam since you all think it will be a better option for the motor.

Is my post invisable? I have a 396 also. Be sure to remember the small base circle I mentioned above. If you guys are going to recomend a custom grind be sure to get all the info out there so he does make a costly mistake. The 847 with a small base circle will make awesome midrange. Yes its old, and yes I always recomend getting a cam spec'd out. But keep in mind the change in the lobe swapping to a small base circle makes the extreme lobes even more crazy. I will give up the specs on my cam even though I usually dont. My cam is 244/250 @ .622/.626 Thats all I will put out there but it gives you an idea. Now let me break down how it drives. I have little off idle TQ(might as wll be a stock car) i have hunting at cruising rpm and crazy idle surge. People are going to tell you that it can be tuned out. Let me tell you no it cant. But you can also expect from 3000-6700 it is going to pull so hard it hurts. I know my cam is much bigger then the 847, but given the time and money Bret can spec you a much smaller cam that will have tons more pull in the middle, better manners, and a slightly higher avg hp. Dont get stupid with it though. My car only put down 300rwhp at 3000 rpm and peaked at 470rwph at 6700. No giggle gas.

I've built and owned a few 396 LT1 motors. First piece of advice: ONLY listen to the people that have actually built and owned these engines. You are going to get alot of advice from guys that have never even owned a stroker.
Secondly, I would not recommend going with a 847 grind. If I were building another motor, I would only call Cam Motion for a custom grind. In my opinion, there are NO good off the shelf grind cams for LT1 strokers (with the exception of a CC306 grind for 383s....they seem to work pretty well with stock ported heads).
Also, you will most likely need a cam ground on a small (.860-.900") base circle to clear the rods. There is never a downfall to running a small base circle cam...you'll just need a longer pushrod. Since you will have to buy pushrods on pretty much any new "custom" engine build, its no big deal.
So, to summarize: call Cam Motion for a custom grind, and specify that you need it ground on a small base circle.

thanks for clearing the small base circle up guys. I would hate to get a cam that would ruin my motor. I am looking for something that will have a power range of 2500-6500. I guess thats info I have to give to the cam grinders huh!
Anymore info is greatly appreciated.
