Default Easiest way to put headers on.

Ok my transmission is currently out of my car so i figured that is would be easier to install my headers now. Does anyone have any suggestions on the easiest way to install headers? Either way its going to be a PITA but i was just wondering if anyone had some suggestions from experience. Thanks ahead of time.

I wouldn't put LT headers on with the trans out of the car, since you might have to pull them off to get the trans back in.

I installed a set of Jet-Hot long tubes when the trans was being serviced, no problem there.
Put the car as high as you can safely on jackstands and you should be able to install them easily. Good luck.

It's hit or miss depending on the headers. I've dropped the trans on long tube equipped cars with the headers in place a few times, but I've also had to remove headers to drop the trans. I had to grind the bell housing for clearance before I could bolt up the pacesetters on my LT1 car. There is no way I could have stuck the trans in with the headers bolted up.

Like I said, I have Jet-Hot long tubes, same design as Hooker's. I have taken down my trans several times, in fact once a year just to refresh the internals. Never had to touch the headers at all.

You sure your motor mounts aren't sagging some? Pacesetters should bolt up fine without clearance issues, unless your motor mounts are sagging or bad. Go with some poly mounts

^^^^Agree Check your mounts, they could be bad. Pacesetters should fit w/o any problems.

Go back and read what I said. I don't doubt you the least bit. My point was simply that it doesn't always work. That's why I told the OP in my first post that he MIGHT have problems, not that it couldn't be done. I've saw it happen both ways over the years.

Sprayed_Z & LT1Formula007, think about it LOL. The motor mounts will in no way change the relationship between the headers and transmission.

Ive heard that its easier if i would unbolt the motor mounts and jack up each side of the motor to get them off.

I had to unhook the passenger side mount, but some people get them to fit with out unhooking any mounts.

I also removed the steering knuckle, alternator, starter, oil dipstick, and spark plugs. Don't forget to unhook the battery before removing the starter and alternator.

Where are you located? I'm sure some locals would help you out.

Anyways like razor says, remove alternator, dipstick, plugs, starter, and you'll probably have to remove the steering linkage on the driver side, it's a pain in the *** to get off. The higher you jack the car, the easier it is to put the headers in.

I advise doing it from underneath. Tape the header gasket to the header to make it easier on yourself, and make sure you get some good gaskets. Are you hooking up the AIR or EGR? If not, that will make this easier.

Lots of beer and band-aids.
Seriously get some double hex bolts like Stage eight locking header bolts. They have (inner) allen head and (outer) hex head which make things easier.

no don't get new o2's right away b/c sometimes the ceramic coating kills o2's and you'll need new ones anyway. oh and if you ask me the easiest way for the pass. side is to unbolt the engine mount and jack the car up like 1 inch slide the header in from the top, hold it in place, and let the car back down onto the mount and replace the bolt. I seriously just did this less than 15 minutes ago and it worked fine.

Find a lift and do it then.. Takeas much as you can off with the car on the ground then list the car up...

Take off the steering linkage also..

took me less then 6 hours.

Drive around for a little while get them heated... your car will start acting stupid after a while and you SES light will come on.. then change your o2s.. dont forget you will need extentions I got 24inch ones and it worked fine..

you may also want a box of sparkplug wire hanging around.
