Default 3.42 Vs 3.73

So a friend of mine just bought a 95 Lt1 and it has the stock 3.23's. Tried to find a thread on feed back about changing to 3.42 or 3.73 but came up short. He's got a stock A4 4l60e, drives a lot of hwy miles. Do you think 3.73 will be too much for the hwy. Be nice to find a site with a chart on both.

Anything helps..thanks

I have 4.10s on my auto right now and it is way too much for the highway. I'm gonna swap it out to 3.42, I think that is the best auto gear if you have to drive a lot of highway miles.

I heard that 4.10 on a A4 was real bad..I just wonder if there is much of a difference between the 3.42 and 3.73 rpm wise.

with the 4.10 gears right now im around 2750 at 70mph, i calculated that with 3.73s it would be around 2500 and with 3.42s it would be around 2300.

I would just stay with 3.23's if I were him, I wouldnt be able to justify the cost of installation and gears plus new bearings etc. etc. just to go from a 3.23 to a 3.42 and for there to be a minimal performance gain. I would say go 3.73 without doubt but because of the highway driving I would just recommend your friend stays stock and puts the money elsewhere maybe into a converter which would be a much greater performance gain then upgrading to 3.42's and would not effect highway rpm's.

Is your car A4 or M6 curious because of your username and what kind of driving do you do? 2.73's are amazing on the highway but so are 3.23's. I use to drive the turnpike everyday with my old LT1 that had 3.23's and I got good mpg and was very happy. There is definetly a noticible performance gain going from 2.73's to 3.23's but still some left out on the table.

If your doing an M6 swap then for sure throw in the stock 3.42's for a lot of highway driving.

3.73's/2800 stall is a good all around combo for both highway/street use. This is what I ran back when my car was my only daily commute.

Here's a pretty cool gear calculator to play with. http://www.f-body.org/gears/ I may be showing my age, but I was playing with cars long before A-4 transmissions were available. A 4.10 gear with a 60E is not bad at all to me since I've taken road trips in cars that ran 3500 at 60 mph.

2.73s are garbage. that **** should never have been put in a performance car. upgrade to at least 3.42.

M6 with stockers(3.42)
My question is what kind of gains do you get out of gears? I know there good but what kind of good? I don't realy care about fuel but I don't want to run constent high rpms on the highway. I have access to 3.73's but sould I get 4.10?

I run 4.10's in a A4 definetly dont recomend for a hwy car. I eventually might drop to 3.73 gears. I really like the 4.10's around town and at the track, its ok taking the back roads to town, but nearly impossible to take on the interstate. if he gets a different daily driver and is going to keep the car for a weekend toy to go raise hell in id definely go with 4.10s.
