Default flowmaster muffler swap?

if a car has the 80 series flowmaster for the lt1, would they be able to cut the 80 serioues muffler out and fit a flowmaster 40 or a super 44 instead? if its not a direct fit what would have to be done to make it fit?

It will work. But don't cut it out just remove the muffler from the pipe. You need the full length of the existing pipe for the new muffler to slide onto.

You can clamp it. you will also need to support the outlet side of the muffler I used a hanger and clamp from autozone and I screwed it to my heat shield.

TAdriver, doesn't your heat shield rattle like crazy with the muffler mounted to it?

I personally wouldn't clamp a Flowmaster. I think the flanges are way too think to be using clamps. Get it welded.

I don't notice any rattling, it is all very secure and the hanger has a rubber section to absorb some of the vibration.

You mean the inlet pipe is too thin? I don't know of any flanges on flowmaster mufflers. FWIW, I have had a single in/out muffler clamped, not welded, in the stock location without the driver's side tail pipe hanger for a few thousand miles now and it's still rock solid. I had to remove the muffler yesterday and it was pure hell trying to get it to let go of the intermediate pipe.

Yes, both the inlet and exhaust coming out of the muffler. Most regular mufflers are ok with clamps, but the steel gauge used on Flowmasters are way think IMO. I have always had all of my exhausts welded for security and seal up leaks.

Here's something that I don't quite understand, An 80 series Flowmaster is built just like a 40 series on the inside except for the fact that it's partitioned off for the exit area. It flows strait though and when it gets to the exiting end it flows to the partitioned side and exits out the tailpipes. To me, saying that a 80 series doesn't flow well is like saying that no Flowmaster flows well maybe that's what people are saying and I'm missing something. Here's a pic of what it looks like inside

and here is a super 40 since there isn't a regular 40 to show See how similar, if one sucks it only makes sense to me that they all do

I just put on my Flowmaster 40 series and I love it. I have a gutted cat now too and it sounds awesome. The sound reminds me of my dad's old '65 vette that had side pipes on it.
