They keep oil off of the cam which reduces rotational losses (free HP).
For some reason I thought that was for Solid Roller setups only??
Could this be done on a daily driver application, I suppose its find for a HR since your using the stock cam.
Any downsides to this?

I don't know that I would recomend it on a daily driver, because I have zero experience in that area.

I have blocked the returns on every LTX race motor that I have ever built and have never seen any kind of wear or failure as a result. That is with both stock lifters and modified stock lifters (both at over 7000 rpm).

Off topic...

How did the Mooresville race go? I didn't get to go to the rescheduled race.

Closed up the LT1 today.

The stock LT1 oil pan was replaced with a 1997 Vortec truck (5 quart) with the baffle removed. We will only be running 4 quarts of oil. The extra pan capacity will reduce windage.

The front cover had to be slightly clearanced for the timing chain.

Note that the stock push rods were replaced with chrome-moly ones from Comp. The rockers are adjusted to one turn past zero lash.

Gizmo, I dont want to sound like a dumb-ace, but why did you adjust the rockers one turn past lash? I thought the "rule of thumb" was 1/2 a turn past zero lash?

Because that is the factory spec. and it worked pretty good for me in the past. That doesn't mean that we won't try other lash settings, but I think that it is the right place to start.

I have tried from 1/8 to 5/8 maybe a little more and noticed no difference.

IMO those preaching no preload find it works better because the valvetrain is out of control and more preload just means more float, they take away all the preload to reduce the height of the float.

Should be noted tht thread count on the studs affects the preload for a given amount of turn. 7/16" studs have fewer threads per inch than 3/8" so one full turn on a 7/16" stud is more preload.

With limited cam specs. a little valve float can actually be a good thing!

Off topic. I am in town this week and should actually get your fuel rails done.

Depends on the cam, I know in some race engines they intentionally float over the nose which could be used to gain lift, BUT it seems some of the popular crap guys put in LT1s actually likes to bounce/float off the seat. I am no racer but I don't think there is ever a case where floating off the seat is beneficial.

I noticed you used the vortec oil pan too. All that a direct bolt in with no modifying?

I run the stock windage tray that mounts to the main caps. The Vortec pan has a long wingdage tray/baffle that has to be removed to work. You just have to grind down a few spot welds to get it out. There are two different Vortec pans. Make sure that you get the high capacity one.

We will be running a stock GM opti with the rotor button screwed on with steel screws and Loctite. The car has Accell Gen VII with a crank trigger so we will not be running the optical part.

When I am an old man (50's) young people probably won't even want to be associated with me any more!!

Take Care,

Daren

Thanks. But I have to say that I get more out of it than I put in. So far, working with these guys has been a bunch of fun. I am really looking forward to seeing them go down the track for the first time.
