Unhappy burning oil

so where do i start...
i have been suspecting that my car might be burning a little oil. it hasnt been doing this long because in my exhaust video i posted in the vid section a while back, you can see that it didnt do it at all. although sometimes i would smell it. but tonight me and my friend were messing around and i got on it pretty hard, i dont beat on it all the time just some spirited driving now and then, so i looked back and there was a huge cloud of blue smoke trailing me for bout a half mile back. so that was the answer to my suspiscion. i havnt looked to see if it does it while im revving it or when i crank it up. so is it worn out rings or valve seals? i have 141k on it btw.
this sucks so bad cause now i cant do anything in it w/o it smoking and looking like some redneck truck

most likely rings...try a compression test to see which cyl it is, and then use a leak-test to see what it is that isnt sealing properly

You might be having the same problem I am and I have less the 5k on my new motor. It seems to be a problem among LTX motors. Take off your Elbow and hold down the throttle look inside the IM and if you see oil there you go.

I am also loosing oil out the back of my IM as there is a gasket back there thats annoying but thats something else.

Anyway even replacing the PCV Valve, putting in a PCV on the Passenger rear elbow to the TB did not completely stop it its a hell of a lot better... and I also have a gray fuel cloud sometimes since i have not gotten a tune yet... but anyway point being you probably will have to get a catch can as I went ahead and did, run it in line on the PCV system and it should handle the IM oil problem. Then you should see an end to it.

But I feel your pain, trust me... it scared the **** out of me when it started and I thought it was rings to as it would never do it on start up or normal driving.... just when I nailed it.

You can find a good catch can with a level indicator and a drain plug in the bottom thats one sealed unit for 29.98 on eBay shipped. Makes life easy when you want to drain it just grab an old oil bottle and your done.

Hope this helped!

yea it really did scare me. at first i thought it was fixing to let go as much as it was lol. i will check the intake manifold to see if there is any residue in it. im gonna do a compression check tomorrow. im fixing to go crank it up to see if it does it on cold starts and revving. hopefully that will help narrow things down. i did some searching on here and found where people do the catch can thing. so i guess i will end up having to do that if it isn't rings.

how high should it read to be "normal" on the compression check?

well its not burning any on startup or slight revving. so i guess its the rings worn out and getting blowby at higher rpm

How about changing the valve stem seals before taking out the engine. As for the compression check my car has got about 210-215psi

As I said mine is the same only on full throttle. And the oil is in the IM, I can see it with a flash light just looking in with it open.
Either way your def higher in miles i am not even at 5k. But I have the same issue as I said. And I highly doubt its rings when I keep finding oil in the IM.

But either way good luck with it.

pcv valve? i am a fan of start with the simple stuff (that probably needs to be replaced anyways) first. mine has a similar problem on a rebuild with about 10k on it now....and i am going to start with the pcv valve first, then take it from there. now i just need to get around to it....effing exams.

I bet it's PCV system related. Do a leak down, but also look inside your manifold to see if it's coated in oil. Pretty common problem. You can buy a filter or catch can to put on your passenger valve cover and it will solve the problem. When you get on it hard your motor is actually sucking small amounts of oil through the hose that connects to your pass. valve cover.

ok so i havnt gotten around to checking the compression. it runs fine and feels as if nothing was wrong. today i revved it up to red line and no oil at all. so i'll check the intake manifold tomorrow to see if there is any oil in it. so since it didn't do it when i revved it does that mean its pcv related and i just need to get a new one and maybe a catch can too?

Free reving the motor to redline isn't a good idea and you can't tell anything anyway because there is no load on the engine. Take it out and hammer it WOT and I bet you will still see blue smoke. You should start with the easy stuff first and go from there. Check the manifold to see if it's coated in oil and also the line running from the TB to the pass. valve cover for oil as well. Then do compression and leak down. My guess is still PCV, but you need to check something.

I have been telling him the same thing someone else did. *shrugs* we all have, pcv system, get a catch can this is common. If you looked in the IM and saw oil like it was suggested you do then you have found your problem.

Do not expect a new PCV to fix it get a catch can and clean out the IM with carb cleaner then let it dry a few hours. I bet it will take care of the problem as it does for most everyone else on the boards.

do you guys with catch can setups on the pcv line still have the valve itself? or did you remove it ?

ok...
i haven't gotten a chance to get on here in a few days. but anyway i bought a new pcv valve and got a small breather filter to put on top of it. and capped off where it ran into the TB. i hammered it twice today and no smoke! thank goodness no big unexpected expense!
