Default LT1 vs 10 bolt rear axle

The 10 bolt rear axle lost.

I knew this was gonna happen. I did everything possible to re-inforce the housing to give this thing a fighting chance of living for a while.

Usually these things break the ring and pinion first because of deflection in the case under torque. It appears that my re-inforcing helped that problem, but in the end, it appears that the carrier simply wasn't strong enough.

At least it stood up to the car running in the 11s on drag radials for a little while before it gave up.

I have enough spare parts laying around to put the car back on the road, all that I'm gonna need to buy is a new ring and pinion. But I'll be taking it a little easier on it for a couple of months until I can get my 9" ordered.

Sad part is, this didn't happen while I was launching the car from a dead stop. I was on an on-ramp getting onto a highway and rolled into the throttle in first, then grabbed 2nd gear, that was it. As soon as I dropped the clutch in second, it sounded like rice krispies on steroids back there

At least I had enough momentum to coast to the next exit.

Same as my sig. The fastest 60' time on that rear was 1.79. The car certainly can 60' faster than that though with a decent rear.

Yea,thanks GM for putting a rear end that was designed for a 4cyl vega/monza in a PERFORMANCE CAR!
they should have kept the 8.5" rear end in play,we would not have these problems as frequent

BTW COLLIN
good job x5

I broke my first one back in 2001. I never could afford to upgrade until now. Better job these days

Although I hate to think how many 9" rears I could have bought by now with all the money that I've spent on 10 bolts in the last 7 years

See, i've decided NOT to let this happen, once its all said & done, i'll be out around 16-1700.00 for my 9" strange N case/spool & 3.89 gears, i just don't like biteing my nails too the core every time i want to make a pass worried if i'll make it home, then i can put on the stickies like i won't & let it rip the way these cars were ment to be drivin lol JK, but at least i can race it with confidence & peice of mind, of coarse i'll be getting a good D shaft also.

Welded the axle tubes to the housing, plus added some bracing from the tubes to the housing. Then of course a T/A aluminum girdle and ARP main cap studs.

I always had problems with breaking the ring and pinion on the first four 10 bolts. I determined that it was from the tubes flexing under torque causing deflection in the ring & pinion ultimately leading to broken teeth. Well, looks like the re-inforcing took care of that problem. This time, the only reason that the r&p were damaged was from the guts of the diff getting caught up in there.

Knowing what I know now about the factory diffs, I could probably build a 10 bolt that would last even longer at this power level using an aftermarket diff....but I'm tired of experimenting with these things. It's time to buy a Midwest 9" and be done with the 10 bolt dance

I grenaded my 10 bolt 2 years ago complete with the stud girdle on a 12 second car...sheared a few teeth off the ring gear. Kinda sounded like an army of monkeys with tack hammers running around in there doin what they do.

I'll be taking my car to the strip soon to see how it fares with 400 rwhp on Nittos and a 10 bolt
