Help with converter swap.

Default Help with converter swap.

I am getting ready to install a new torque converter and need to know if any special tools are needed to disconnect the trans lines. I read somewhere that you need a flare nut wrench. If so what size? This is my first time dropping a transmission.

1/4" flare nut wrench is suggested for the tranny lines. Other than that you'll want a few extensions (the longer the better) some open ended 14s, some regular 14s, some sockets (deep and regular) and some knuckle things. (whatever they are called)

I can do a converter swap in well under 2 hours anymore. They are cake. It's just having the correct combination for which tranny bolt you are trying to do.

listen to LSWHO he knows his stuff... it can be a PITA air tools def do help... taking it out seemed harder then putting it back in... the tranny that is...

I would be happy to change mine in 4 hours. Do you use a trans jack.

anyone think it would be easier to drop the whole k-member and then unbolt the trans? instead of laying under a car struggling with it for a few hours?

If you don't have LTs, you should be able to get a all of the bell housing bolts pretty easily once everything else is unhooked. LTs (at least hookers) limit how far the tranny will tilt. The one thing I find very useful is a craftsman 14mm socket with a built in swivel. Also, don't forget the flywheel turning wrench.

I haven't used one. I did my tranny swap in my garage without one. Just one regular floor jack and 2 6 ton jacks and 2 4 ton.

I wouldn't do that. That's way more work than necessary. Most people have trouble with 2 bolts down there. I got all mine out VERY easily. Like I said just have the right combination of tools.
