Default T56 gear grind when cold. Normal?

Right after starting the car and pulling out of the driveway, if I shift just a tad to quick when its cold out, I occasionaly get a small gear grind.

This can happen for maybe a mile and then it never happens again till the next morning. I assume the tranny needs to warm up a bit.

Never happens after the first mile or so.

Normal?

Not uncommon. If the trans/fluid have 30K+ miles on them, you may want to put in a fresh fill of DexIII fluid. I've had luck with Mobil1 ATF in the cold, but ymmv.

same problem here, mine is BAD until it warms up so im really slow and careful while selecting gears when the trans is cold. gonna try a fluid change one of these days.

I never have that problem but car only has 40K o0n it so maybe you need to change fluid.

I found

Redline D4 fluid solved the 1-2 cold "notchy" feeling.

Once in a while my tranny doesn't want to go into reverse...mostly when its cold. Haven't even looked into it though.

Interesting. 1-2 shift recently in very cold (freezeing temp) I really need to take it slow shifting in. Trans was recently rebuilt, and has New Mobil One fluid.

Mine has alwasy shifted MUCH better when hot.

Mines does the same thing, usually it only does it the first time I shift and thats it. But if it sits for over a week and its cold out, usually takes several miles till it stops, its just cause its cold.

I have the same issue as well. A small amount of grinding when the trans is very cold first thing in the morning. Always goes away when hot. I'm glad to see this thread and find out I'm not the only one. Sounds like I may have a fluid change in my future maintenance plans. We'll see how it goes from there. Until then I shift very carefully until the car has warmed up.

It is a very common thing....You really need to watch your shifts and do them slowly until it warms up......That's part of the cold notchy feel or grind that most of us get...
