Default T56 prob...

The car is stuck in 3rd gear and nuetral. I had to drive on the interstate in 3rd gear last night to get home, it sucked. lol

Before yesterday the tranny has been fine and shifted pretty smoothly. Then all of a sudden it starts locking me out of gears, grinding gears, and now is stuck in 3rd.

What's going on here? I just bought the car 4 days ago. I have never powershifted it, nor have I "beat" on the tranny. Aka how expensive is this going to be

This just happened to my buddies LT1, car had 170k on it, and led a rough life. He bought a complete rebuild kit and dropped the tranny off to a rebuild shop, couple hundred bucks later, its as good as new, what you have done to the car in the last "4 days" has nothing to do with the trans going out, trust me. Its what the car has seen before you. sounds like a broken shifter fork or something in the trans causing other things to jam up, it sucks, but I would pull it out yourself to save money and have it rebuilt by a proffessional.

You most likely broke one of the struts in the tranny. The tend to snap and get wedged in the teeth of the gears, locking the transmission into a particular gear. First time I broke my original T56 (also right after I bought my car), this happened to me and locked me into fourth. Had to drive home in fourth gear and it never came out of fourth until we pulled it apart. Time for a rebuild.

Yeah, but is still going back and forth between neutral and 3rd, not just stuck in 3rd gear.

Still not saying I don't agree with your assumption, but MAY not be that bad since he can still get it out of 3rd gear.

I had a T5 that would only go into 4th gear and neutral...shift fork was bent, and was binding. Replaced teh fork and away I went.

Yeah, someone already suggested that so I figured I'd throw another possibility out there. Either way he's gonna be pulling it apart.
