Default ? for you t56 builders

I'm getting ready to convert my LT1 t56 to LS1 input shaft and mid plate. I know some of you recommend .002" of bearing preload. To set this, do I assemble without shim, check endplay ? Say I have .035" endplay, do I install .037" shim then re assemble ? Thanks in advance, Dean.

No, install everything as it would be put together, and take your reading.

Yes.. You have to measure without any shims, then add the additional preload value to the reading.. You can't measure preload once it's installed, you would only be able to measure end-play.

Glad 85MIke caught it, sorry bout that. I went straight past the preload, and was referring to endplay, and not bearing preload.

Will .002 be the correct preload I should shoot for, or do I need some end play? I've only built automatics before and they always have some endplay. Thanks, Dean.

0.000-0.002" preload is what I shoot for on the inputshaft. This is about .002" tighter than specs. The countershaft is spec already tighter than the input, so adjust accordingly.

Hi, I'm generally unfamiliar with these trannies, but am about to dive into a 6.0L/T56 build for my chevelle. I've run across two LT1 T56s and just starting searching how simple or difficult it would be to put an LS1 type input shaft in an LT1 trans. Is a it big deal? Is there a specific donor piece I should look for (or maybe an upgraded piece)?

Also, what's the mid plate swap about?

Thanks,
TJ

You need to swap the Midplate and Input Shaft to make it a LS1 type from a LT1 type..or vice versa.
It's not hard to do, all you need is that specific Input Shaft and Midplate.

make sure it is NOT a 93 unit....94-97 are OK to use.

Midplate, bellhousing, hydro's, inputshaft, but a 10-15 minute job....
