Default Help!!!!

my car is in the shop to have the clutch master cylinder replace, just got a call from their office and have been informed that the slave cylinder also needs to be replaced. He also informed that I need a new clutch kit (flywheel, pressure plate, pilot bearing, disk). grand total comes out to $1900. i know nothing about what this should cost... is it really this expensive for clutch work or am i being put through the ringer? he also informed that it is impossible to buy just the clutch disk and pressure plate... that the flywheel is sold inclusive and is about $500 worth the cost that i don't need... is it realy impossible to purchase the disk and pressure plate without the flywheel?!? somebody please ease my mind about this.

u can get a good clutch kit for way cheaper than wat their tryin to make u pay when i put a new clutch kit in my cobra i use to have i only paid $200 for the (pressur plate, throw out bearing, pilot bearing, and the clutch its self)(also was a stge 1 racin clutch) but i also done the work myself too and yes the flywheel is usaully that high spec for a good 1 so if i was u i would check in on a clutch kit yourslef and find how much u can get 1 and compare it to their price before u have them get it but mostly your payin for labor

the labor is the killer. do you know what clutch they are quoting you on? for that money it better be a good one. you could pick up a ls7 kit with slave for under $1000.

Spec will sell you a clutch, and PP plate for the stock flywheel. But for $1900 it better be a damn good clutch. Most places charge right around $300 for labor on a clutch. You can get a complete Monster kit including a flywheel, slave, berings for a great price, they are even $100 off right now i believe, sounds like you are getting the shaft.

IMO if you pay the labor; replace everything while they are there.

Hey that is about right for the price. For a Monster level 3 installed with a tick adjustable master and a new slave, its around $1700.

New Era Performance, which is a sponsor, charges $500 for labor to do the hydraulics and clutch install. The monster also comes with a new flywheel. I would see what clutch you are getting.

I am actually going to do mine myself for $1100 with the above mentioned parts. Never done one before, but with all the support on the board, should be a piece of cake.

Here in NY, where it snows like crazy, I have all winter to work on it. Not sure where your from, sounds like you need to drive it all year.

If you have the tools, you can probably get a way better clutch and install it your self for $1900. Did they tell you what clutch they want to install?

Here is the breakdown to give you an idea for stock power level:

Monster clutch for stock power $670, includes new flywheel and slave cylinder. This is for up to 425hp

Adjustable Master cyclinder- (tick) $340 or you can get a GM one for under $200 that is not adjustable, but adjustable is recommended.

Speed Bleeder $50

New bolts - $20

So about $1100 if you do it yourself. Some people wouldnt take this task on though. If you have the tools, its not that hard.

The clutch kit I was quoted for is the Luk 04-173 kit. After doing some research I found the same kit through clutch city online for $435 with free ground shipping. The original quote I got from the shop for the clutch master cylinder was $326 (with labor) before they got the tranny out and advised that the slave cylinder would also need to be replaced. The math just doesn't seem to add up... $326 for the master, $435 for the entire clutch kit... how the hell are they getting $1900 for the master, the slave, the clutch kit and the labor?!? sounds like some serious bullshit to me, esp if SWEET98SS is saying that a monster level 3 with master and slave is only $1700. the $1900 is still just a preliminary estimate, have to talk to the shop again on monday, but this sounds sketchy to me. thanks for the input guys!

Yes, they are attempting to take you to the cleaners!
$500 to do a master and clutch seems a little steep. Most do a clutch swap for around $300 from what i have seen, around $200 for a master swap is kinda high; only takes around an hour. Prices are different all around. But i would never pay $1900 for a clutch and install; it's not a hard swap.

I didnt think $500 was that bad. If you want a good clutch you will pay for it. I am going to get one to handle 700 hp so if I ever do heads along with my cam, I wont have to put another clutch in.

If you have any mechanial ability, I would just do it yourself. Tons of support here. I just did my intake manifold, someone made a video and I just brought my laptop out in the garage and watched the video as I did it.

parts I just put on mine and prices

ls7 clutch flywheel p/p and slave $535 from GM

tick adjustable m/c $340

speedbleeder $50

tranny fluid $40

Doing the work myself so grand total $965.

fyi if you have even basic tools at the house you can go to an auto parts store and get a replacement master for $70 and do it yourself in about 2 hours.

will give you more info if you want it on doing it yourself.

PS most shops charge 95 an hour. So they will charge you 2 hours for the master and atleast 4 four the clutch. My tranny mechanic in town can change a clutch out in 2 hours but like i said most shops will charge 4-6 hours.

i wouldn't be apposed to the idea of trying to do it myself, except i literally have absolutely no time, no tools at present, a gravel driveway - without even a descent jack (just the crappy one for changing the spare in the trunk, which i do not feel comfortable working with).

what i think i'm reading though is that parts for a generic m/c, slave and clutch kit shouldn't be in total more than ~$800? i guess anything more than that would be labor, but there's no way it should be $1100 worth. gotta call the shop again tomorrow and find out what the deal is.

ALLDATA time guide says 1.3 hours for the Master and 5.4 for the clutch. Most shops are going to use labor time guides like this.

But realisticly it isn't going to take that long. Warrenty would hav paid 1.0 hour for the master and 2.9 hours for the clutch.

If the shop is quoting you 5 hours of labor I would think that is fair. My question is why are they saying you need all of it and why were you having them install a Master in the first place?
