Default Grind going into 2nd at low RPM

When I shift from 1 to 2 under 2,000 RPM's it grinds going into second. All of the other gears are fine. I usually shift at about 2,200-2,400 around town and it goes into second very smoothly. Any ideas? The car has 63,000 miles on it with original fluids. Also, the longer I keep the clutch in, the worse it seems to grind. It's more "clunky" sometimes rather than a lound grind because I can tell the gear is moving slowly inside there.

You are not the first with this car? If the PO liked to do smokey burnouts with a 1-2 shift in the mix, you recieved the fall -out of poor operation. If you are the one who enjoyed this practice, time to pay the piper!!! It sounds like you have damaged synchros. The only cure is a rebuild.

I bought the car from a lady actually but her husband might have had some fun in it on weekends. I have owned it for about 9 months and have never done a burnout in it yet. I will look into a rebuild but I will probably just keep driving it and shift out of first at a higher RPM. The only reason I am shifting that low is to keep the noise down a little around my house and at work in the parking lot.

just shift at 2k. just delay that rebuild until you can get a stage 2 rebuild by Tick

I'm afraid that I might be starting to get this exact same problem with 2nd

the worst part is, I baby my car and never slam gears - and the last owner was the same way. And my trans fluid was just changed...

I have that problem with 3rd some times. LIke if I am trying to drop it into 3rd to pass or something while going in 4th or 5th sometimes it grinds even though clutch is fully pushed in.

mines pretty tricky to get into 2nd...stock 1 owner who "didn't beat it" and only 40k. Just figure out how to drive around it and get it into gear smoooth. If it starts acting up bad though just get it rebuilt asap or your rebuild is gonna cost more

same problem with my truck second grinds so i just throw it in hard and don't worry about it, hasn't happened on my car yet...but on my camaro 2nd is the hardest effort to get in if you don't count reverse I think you shift into second on the move the most of any gear, so i think that gear is the first to go on a lot of cars... a lot of time is spent in 2nd

The synchros just don't "go bad". There are few things that cause the synchros to "go bad". Classic is the plastic fork pads. The plastic gets brittle from the heat cycle and they break. When the fork has play in it, the synchro ring doesn't engage the gear all the way, and this causes the synchro to "go bad". Second most common cause is the stamped steel synchro keys. If you ever power shift or shift hard, these don't last.

But the bad news is the OP most likely have to have the trans rebuilt. I'll give you some advise, do it before it get's worse, it will be cheaper than if one of the key fragments gets lost in the trans.

This is what happened to a trans that ignored the bad signs. It cost him dearly.

Same problem with my 5th gear. I'll be rebuilding soon so in the mean time I just double clutch and it's fine.
