The last roller being the non-tapered one with the last bearing race in the tailhousing (not including the slip yoke bushing) ? The only time I've seen one of those fail was one that was melted was in a car that had a fire.

Was reverse lockout functional? Pics of damage?

what it looked like was that the last cage bearing failed then the reverse gear got so hot it melted the syncro hub and the syncro to the gear along with the bottom cage bearing spacer and the reverse thrust washer and snap ring together the only thing i can think of is that the last cage bearing got smashed and not in the race pushing down on the whole unit

did you put the snap ring on the reverse hub where it rides on the mainshaft? Was the snap ring in good shape?

talked to a couple trans builders and they have suggested that for the parts to get that hot that fast it had to be a lubercation issue? any comments

FWIW, the REV parts get very little lubrication during breakin, which is why I always use liberal amounts of trans assembly lube there and most everywhere. At $7 a tub, it's a no brainer IMHO..

I too use grease generously when assembling the units. With that said, used units do tend to sit for months or years at a time after being ran and there is almost not fluid still up there upon running it again. Usually the issue listed above is from either crowding somewhere or I've seen where the snap ring is not seated into the groove well and the high spots start to create heat where it rubs the reverse gear.

Ok guys I have the same issue with one. Only problem is I can't get the reverse sycro hub off! Is there a c clip between the hub and gear? I have the gear off *** it is melted in half, but part of the "nose"? Of the gear is still stuck to the hub. I cut the mainshaft off behind the hub and still can't get anything to pull it off!!

Yes, there's a square-cut lockring retaining the reverse synchro which in turn retains the 5-6 cluster driven gear. Sounds like you need to get the other half of the gear chipped away in order to remove that ring. Rev. synchro hub will then come off. On heat-damaged parts, sometimes without a puller!
