Default VDO Speedo connect to t56 reverse lockout?

While researching the various ways to connect up the reverse lockout solenoid, I came across the usual suggestions (brake light switch, etc). But something else occurred to me. I have a VDO gauge set, and the Speedo has a pin for alarm output. I *think* this feature is programmable, but can't find much that describes it. In theory, it can be set to turn on if the car's speed goes over 3 or 4 MPH. This, in turn can be used to trigger the lockout solenoid.

Pretty slick if it works, especially if it can be done without turning on the red warning light in the gauge.

Thoughts, anyone? Any VDO gurus out there? The speedo in question is a VDO Viewline, PN # A2C53408268-S

I don't have anything to offer, but it sounds like a good idea.

It looks possible, but the warning light will come on as well. I might try it just to see if I can get used to it. According to the instruction sheet, Pin 13 of the 14-pin connector triggers to ground when the warning speed is exceeded. This is on the speedo with turn-signal, brake and high beam indicators.

Sounds good.
Perhaps a shade / light filter could be added to the back of the face of the speedo.
Maybe even altered to be on below 4mph; off above.

You can swap the on/off logic with a relay...which is probably a good idea anyways to not have a solenoid's current running through a gauge.

definitely. I was thinking about that, especially after getting a close look at the solenoid.

i guess i must have missed the point of this. The reverse inhibitor is active( inhibiting) with no power. Powering it will release the load. It gets power from the ECM below 5mph to ease getting reverse. What are you trying to do?

The trans is going into a 2nd Gen TA with VDO gauges. I can go the brake petal switch route, but I've got nightmare visions of tossing it into reverse while heel-toeing during a road race. Call me a pessimist :-) Anyway, I have a four-pole two-way relay that can work either way:

1. On while energized, off while not energized
2. off while energized, on while not energized

If I'm reading you right, I need to go the second route with it. I also have some relays I pulled out of a totalled BMW 323, they work the normal way (on while energized).

Now I see. The 2nd option is it. I've seen a momentary 12v switch work well. Mount it to push with the left hand ( somewhere on the left dash) while looking rearward an shifting reverse.

Actually, that sounds like a pretty solid idea. The dash isn't anywhere near stock, and I can fit a momentary switch in on the left side pretty easily. Why over-complicate things?

I think wiring it to the speedo is less complicated because the operation now becomes 100% automatic, and you never have to think about how it works...and you can let anyone you want to drive the car, and they won't have trouble figuring out how to get it in reverse.
