Default rebuilt t56 - 3rd gear whining?

I have about 300 miles on a rebuilt unit, and I don't know if it's been there the whole time, or it recently developed.

The whine starts as you are just engaging 3rd gear, and continues to whine until you get out of 3rd gear... It's not a tremendous scary whine, but it's making me nervous.

WTF? I'm hoping this is "normal"

Most threads I've read about this are that t56's can be a little noisy... any opinions?

Don't know Jim. Just had my T56 rebuilt by TDP and got it back in. After spending over a grand I hope there are no issues. Did you use synthetic or regular fluid? I was told by TDP to use only the regular Dex III.

I used regular Dex III. Everything seems great otherwise. I guess if it doesn't get any worse any time soon, it's nothing to worry about?

You might ask the place that rebuilt it about the whine.

I agree. I always wondered why people post on here before calling the shop first. I bet it wasn't cheap to get the rebuilt so if you have any concerns, always voice them to the installer.

my built trans from six speeds inc has whined for 3 years. its most noticeable in 1st and 2nd gear it seems. i've drove it all over and made a bunch of dragstrip passes. never had an issue. I use GM syncromesh trans fluid.

The gear shouldn't whine. Usually the only time a gear will whine is when its under-cut. This will happen if it gets ran low on fluid, but usually the input (4th) is the first to get damaged. Maybe they put a bad 3rd in there by accident?
Like mentioned above, there usually won't be a problem, but it's just annoying to have a whining gear.

Based on the time and effort required to remove the trans, pack it up, and ship it back to the place that re-built the unit and waiting a week or so for it to come back, I prefer to do some initial research/get some opinions before going through this whole process again.

I'm a pretty busy person, and this is also a good way to document a problem, before it's 6 months later and I still haven't acted upon it.

Well, as much as I hate to have a rebuilt trans making noise in any gear, I'm not going through all that again.

At least I know it's more than likely not a problem that I need to worry about.

Personally Jim the trans would have to do a lot more than whine before I would go through all of that. Turn up the radio until it won't go anymore..lol

Yeah, normally the exhaust drone takes care of the whine, but when I fix the exhaust, I know the 3rd gear whine will sound louder than it does now.

Getting some feedback on the severity of the problem, and weather or not I need to do something about it is all I really wanted to accomplish.

Sounds like it's just a bit of an annoyance from what others have said.

Thanks guys-
