Default cts-v t56 conversion for an fbody

What all must I change to make this work? To make a long story short, I was GIVEN this tranny in working condition, and I need to make it fit my 2000 SS. It has a factory t56, but it's under extensive rebuild (prepping for a stroker later) and I'd like to have a "backup" tranny since I already have it!

If you can find a GTO core trans., that would be the cost-effective, most-matching-parts way of doing it. Then the only F-body piece needed would be the offset shift lever.

In any case, refer to Mike's 1000hp T56 thread. His PDF goes through the parts needed to make it like a GTO trans. Which again, is a shift lever away from 100% bolting into an F-body.

Cool, that's what I was thinking as far as the difference but I didn't know for sure.. Now I guess the question would be; is it worth bothering to convert this tranny with "donor" parts, or should it just be set aside, being that a
gto donor is gonna cost me the price of a tranny anyway lol, I guess now the individual part cost for the switch will be the factor here.. (Buy parts for mm12 for conversion or buy used t56 and sell mm12)?

There are estimated costs in the write-up. Did you look at it?

Default CTS V trans

If you have the three bolt on the tail end, you can buy an adapter...
See attached.
I did some minor lathing to give me a little more clearance on the OD for the torque arm, and opened up the front side for it sit flat on the flange fingers.
You can get the driveshaft direct from the label on the shaft and save some monies.
The torque arm and crossmemebr is a huge challenge here.
We made both, I have heard that a third gen torque arm is longer than a fourth gen.
I have a Midwest chassis torque arm off a 4th gen sitting around, never used except for mock up.

To put it simple, you need the following;
GTO mainsahft
Fbody/GTO tailhouisng
Fbody/GTO shift rail
F-body offset lever
f-body detent assembly

The CTS V has a shorter input (1/2inch), but all you have to do is use the C6 pilot bearing and it will work fine.
I have a used tailhouisng $175 shipped

What about the bell housing depth? I am trying to use a modified CTS V on a 6.0 and the slave is too short.

Actually the input is not any shorter the bell housing is just deeper. I had to replace an input shaft in my CTS-V (2005 model) and it and the GTO input were the same. You do have to use the C6 style pilot due to this however.

They are different lengths, and have different part numbers.

The longer bellhousing is used with the shorter shaft, and larger o.d. bearing in the CTS-V.

Default 05 v

Same as guy above me. Ik this is an old thread but I'm trying to do the opposite. I've had an LS fbody trans sitting around for a while and I just bought a V1 that needs the trans. Can I just swap the bellhousing, tail housing and shifter?

As gone over earlier, the GTO mainshaft is the "CTS-V gearset into F-body unit" mainshaft.

There is no "F-body gearset into CTS-V" mainshaft.

CTSV, GTO, MN12 Corvette Z06 T56 have the same Gears and Synchros. Triple Cone 1&2, Dual Cone 3-6, Brass on the Reverse.
All three have completely different Mainshafts. Countershaft is the same for all 3.

Corvette MN6 T56 Gears and Synchros are Triple Cone 1&2, Dual Cone 3-6, Brass on the Reverse. Same ratios as the Fbody T56, not any of the above.

Fbody T56 has it's own Gears and Synchros, Dual Cone 1&2, Single Cone 3-6, Brass on the Reverse.
Mainshaft is only compatible with them Gears. Countershaft is the same as the Corvette MN6 T56, unless you have the oddball 1993 T56.

The guys that buld them know what I'm talking about, but I'm explaining it for those that don't.

I built a LS Fbody T56 with the guts of a Corvette MN6 T56, needed the GTO Mainshaft to do it.
