Default how can you tell if a t56 is bad when its out of car! before you buy it

how do you or can you tell if a tuet2066 t56 out of a 2006 GTO trans is good or bad before I buy it? its out of the car. ( it makes a little noise when i turn the input shaft back and fourth)
I want to bolt it to a LQ9 motor if this setup will work?

thanks for the help

End play measurements if that's all you can do will give some indication of bearings and shims

Make sure it shifts into all 6 + Rev and rotates properly in each (there will be drag of course)

Take into account the outright trans. price from a sponsor or the cost of a general rebuild.

what end play measurements should i look for?

and how much drag? ( their wasn't a lot of drag when i rocked the input shaft back & forth)

and the guy selling it has the clutch, pressure plate and flywheel from the GTO and the same from a Corvette. will either one of those bolt on to my LQ9 or LQ4 or will i need other stuff to make this work.

You will not be able to measure anything to suggest worn bearings. You can wiggle the input and output shafts to see if they move an excessive amount. Also make sure it will go into each gear. You might have to wiggle the input shaft to get it into all of the gears. I bought mine used and had no way to test it, so I went the safe route and pulled it apart and built it up with a stage 2 kit. Good thing I did, found a badly worn 1-2 synchro and some worn through fork pads.

Gto and Vette units are prone to cracking the 3rd gear outer steel syncro ring. There is no way to tell if the ring is cracked unless you drive it or tear it down.

For endplay just set a dial gauge up on the input shaft and pull in and out and same for tail shaft. I'm not sure of the spec

ok so the guy will let me open it up and take a look at every thing so i will look at the 3rd gear steel syncro ring.what are other items that are prone to the GTO T56. also what is the differences from a regular f body T56 and a GTO T56. I should ask if this T56 & lq9 will work in my 1968 camaro or will i have to modify stuff.
thanks for the help

Its pretty hard to inspect the 3rd gear ring without tearing it down. In fact, its impossible by just pulling the front plate off. I would pull the plate off, If the gears are not sharp or discolored (purplish color), buy it assuming the price is right. Usually a good pull out GTO box with bell housing fetch $1200-$1500. If there is any doubts on its condition, I would give more than $800 for it with bell housing. The $500-$600 range is a safer bet if you cannot confirm its condition.

OK i opened up the whole trans and it looks like new. even the shift fork pads don't show any sign of wear. but i screwed myself and didn't look at how the 3/4 & 5/6 shifter rail is orientated with each other ( the pac-man looking thing )and with the shifter also how do i tell when its in neutral. can some one post a few pics for me.
