For some reason my T56 won't downshift from 5th to 6th. I can up shift perfectly. Say I'm crusining in 6th and start to slow down and go into 5th its just like I don't have a gear there. Like trying to put a 4 speed into 5th. If I let the clutch out and continue trying it doesn't grind or anything its just like nothings there. If I go into 4th not letting the clutch out and I can shift into 5th fine. I can shift in and out of 6th all day long its only 5th gear. I can hold constant pressure on the shifter trying to go into 5th and if I come to a complete stop while still holding pressure it'll fall right into 5th just not while the car is rolling. I also can't go in and out of 5th. Any ideas? Its only got about 12 to 15k on the transmission.

DO NOT TEAR DOWN! THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH YOUR T56!!! This is an anti-racing feature GM built into these transmissions. They basically didn't want you to use 5th gear as a passing gear on the freeway. I just inheirited a TA from my brother and he told me about this. I can't remember if he told me it was an electronic lockout or something mechanical built into the transmission. When I want to down shift to fifth I just drag it into 4th real quick and push it back up to 5th. I know it's weird but it's totally normal. What year is your car?

My word of wisdom: Double clutching is a term used for the fast and the furious and 40 year old dump trucks but every time I down shift, I let off the clutch slightly and blip the throttle between shifts. It makes it slide into 3rd at 70 like you have some sort of power assist shifting in your tranny. If your 5th gear blocker ring is junk, you'll probably have to do this from now on to get it into 5th and have it rev-match the gear so it will actually go in. I'd just use 4th since it's not all that much lower then quick shift to 5th then 6th like they were intended. The "anti-hot rodding device" is the restrictor in the clutch line making the drill mod necessary fyi

You probably just need a fluid change. Mine would not drop to 5th from 6th when cruising unless I went 6-4-5. I changed to M1 and it was much better. I changed again to Redline D4 fluid and it was even smoother!
I also put in a Tick MC, not sure if it was one or the other or both.

I know it's a very old post, but I was searching for weeks not finding the answer. Here is a video of why my T56 would not downshift from 6-5. It felt like I hit a wall. Leaving this for future searchers.
