Default t56 1-2 blocker ring and synchro sloppy

I am rebuilding my t56 and have a question about the blocker rings being sloppy. Are these supposed to be this way. I can move them about 3/16 of an inch up and down. both blocker rings are this way on both sides of the 1-2 synchro. I didnt know if this was normal or not. I dont want to go any further until I know there isnt something else wrong. Thanks

I guess what I am asking is whether or not I am checking the cone clearances correctly. The cone clutch material looked good but the blocker ring goes right up to the gear with no clearance. the book says it needs 20 thousandths to be o.k.I dont want to buy the $40 clutch cone If I dont need it and needs something else.

1/2 synchro on the F-body T56 is a double-cone and you can't use feeler gauges to measure their worth. The only effective way is to clean and dry the whole setup, and use machinist dye to coat the metals of the friction part of the synchro. After the dye dries, rotate the entire blocker (inner and outer cones) with a little pressure and see the wear patter on the dye. If it's not fully and completely removed where the friction cone meets it, the frictions and metals should be replaced

I can try that but the blocker ring still bottoms out on the gear face. If I push on the blocker ring toward the gear it should wedge the cone clutch in between the the two cones and have some sort of gap? I did replace the cones just not the clutch since it looked good. You dont happen to have a measurement on the clutch as in thickness of clutch material do you? thanks for the help.

There's no measurement. It either wipes the surface or it doesn't and needs replaced.

I ordered 2 new frictions and it checks out now with 20 thousandths clearance like the manual says. I talked to Tick and D&D ,they both said there should be clearance there and said the frictions were smoked.
