Default Shifter/Trans Rise when on gas

Hey guys,
Just bought my '01 T/A WS6 (T56) and couldn't be happier. Few things to touch up on but that's expected for an 11 year old car. Something I noticed after I bought it is that the shifter will rise a few inches when I get on the gas aggressively. There is no shifter play so I'm guessing it is the whole transmission that is moving. I searched around and have come to the conclusion that either my transmission mount is loose, missing bolts or needs replacing. Seems like a Prothane Transmission Mount is the way to go if it needs replacing.

Just wondering where you guys shop or if anyone has a better suggestion. This car is going to be a DD for now. It will definitely see Willow Springs Raceway later in life but not yet.

Thanks for your guys' help in advance,
Cesar

Mine used to do that even with the prothane mount. I switched to a tunnel mounted tq arm and it stopped doing it. I believe it is the tq arm that causes it under hard acceleration more than anything.

I'm sure others will disagree but that's my personal experience.

it makes sense that the tq arm would cause it, being that under load the front end of it lifts and in stock form its bolted to the *** end of the tranny, FWIW i never noticed it with my car before but it doesnt do it now and i have the tq relocated

Is yours a 6 speed? Do a hard pull up to about 100 or so and then let off in whatever gear you are in (assuming 3rd or 4th) and see if you feel it settle back down... I didn't always notice it when I was ripping on it (probably cause I was too busy watching the tach and cops) but I could definately feel it when I let off.

No doubt a poly trans mount will help. Just not sure it's the cure.

While it will help with the movement, it will also cause stress on the tailshaft housing.

Your best bet is what kyoytey did.

Thanks for all of the replies. Im going to get under it this weekend to make sure the trans mount is bolted down properly. If everything seems fine i will go kyoytey's route. Again, thanks for all of the responses.

Trust me, after 6 FBody's, I'll guarantee you the trans mount is torn. Prothane here and NO issues afterwards.

A broken trans mount could cause it but the trans mounted torque arm will too.

We've got a winner here, I have a Poly mount in mine as well. My shifter used to shift upwards when jumping to full throttle with no tip in, it would jump up and forward. Now it doesn't move at all.

Correct me if i'm wrong but I believe you need at least Poly motor mounts or solids to do the poly transmission mount.

You can always just get a new stock style from any auto parts store.

I am curious about this too because I definitely need a new mount.

Yeah, that's kinda one of the prerequisites of running a poly trans mount; Either solids or polys. Hell, if you have LT headers you should have polys at LEAST anyways.

Sort of, see below.

Like I mentioned further up the thread. You can put a stiffer mount in it, that's your choice. It only fixes a symptom, not the problem. The torque arm is mounted to the tailshaft housing of the transmission. When you get on it, the diff case wants to spin the opposite way of the tires causing the torque arm to shove upward on the transmission tailshaft housing. Over time this will wear out the stock and even aftermarket mount.

Ways to fix this:

The only way to truly fix this issue is to relocate the torque arm mount to the body.

Why? Because it is no longer attached to the transmission it will not shove up on it. Duh.

Why shouldn't I put a stiffer mount in? Because when you have a stiffer mount or even a solid mount, you have a much greater risk of breaking the tailshaft. The force from the torque arm is still there, so it has to be absorbed by the trans case.

Putting in all solid mounts is great. Do it. Just use a body mount torque arm as well. If no one else has shown or explained to you yet, you will pick up a lot of vibration from solid or aftermarket mounts. Yes, it was there before, but the old mounts absorbed it.

I agree with that statement.... in the long run. If you're just looking to get the Viagra out of the shifter when you hammer it, a poly trans mount WILL clear that up.

If you're willing to even go that far though, as Black96 already stated, you should DEFINITELY be in the market for a torque arm relocation kit.

trans mount.. end of story... go buy 23 dollar energy suspension mount and be done with it.. you'll hook up better too, instead of completely obliterating the tires into 2nd... if the trans mount is GOOD, then the torque arm can cause the trans to rise because its firmly bolted to the crossmember... now if mount is broken, then torque arm causes trans to rise.. real simple here
