The best oil to use in a T56 is any good ATF. I cange the oil in my trany about evey 5k. Yea i know u don't have to cange it that much but it never looks old when i drain it.

TX_SS- Well, since you've got an '02, you get Mobil-1 synthetic from the factory.
The easiest thing to do would be to look in the manual (and cross check with what it says on the T-56 itself) and run whatever it says; Mobil-1 synthetic should be relatively easy to get at a local AutoZone/Advanced Auto Parts/O'Riellys, etc.
Moving up (and this is all debatable), Royal Purple Synchomax, Redline D4 ATF, or Redline MTL may all be options you could explore.
If you decide to research this here, keep in mind you have an '02, as you'll be sure to see posts to the effect that running a synthetic will hurt your blocker rings/synchros - this is in relation to 98-00 T-56's, 01 and up I don't anyone debates can run a synthetic.
Remember though, this things take a 20-30 weight fluid, not a 80-90 weight lube....just an fyi.
Good luck!

Most people never use to change it in their M6s. I think its a good idea. I first did mine at 45k and really should do it again now at 77k. Ive just used the GM Dexron III and so far my tranny has NEVER been touched other than clutch swaps!

You can get synchromesh at the dealer, but it isnt Dexron III and thats not what our trannies call for in the owners man. or on the tranny itself. I chose to use what GM says to use seeing how they sell both products!

I've never, ever, ever seen a post where GM Synchromesh gave bad results.
I've seen people post that they couldn't tell a difference, but never where someone claimed it hurt their tranny.
To the contrary, there are lots of people who have had positive results with GM Synchromesh.
As for using what GM says to use, there are many (most?) people here who have somewhat non-stock items on their ride listed in their signatures...I'm fairly sure without researching that most if not all have not come from GM.
Using what GM recommends could either be seen as positive, neutral, or negative...just depends what your outlook and intention is.
TX_SS- Let us know with what you went with, it's always nice to get feedback!

I too used Synchromesh. Made it shift a lot smoother. This was even with 91K miles. I ran Synchromesh in my Tremec 3550 I had in my Mustang as well. Tremec reccomends using Synchromesh over any other fluid anyway. You do need to get it at the dealer, but I think it's around $8 retail.

Everybody has an opinion, I just know what Ive had good luck with. Why even try something else? Had a bad exp. with what the manufacturer recoms.? Of course not. Everybody thinks their smarter then GM. I will honestly tell you this My car has over 1200 passes at the track. My tranny has NEVER been touched except for clutch changes. Thats no BS just facts. Ive only used DEXRON III. Theres my testimonial. Do what you will

NastySSoo- I never said I was smarter than GM (although sometimes I seriously wonder what car manufacturers think on some things they do...), however that doesn't mean I blindly trust and follow their (well, I drive Ford's, so for me I'm referring to Ford) recommendation on everything about the car.
You say except for clutch replacement, nothing has been touched on your T-56? I am pretty ignorant on the mechanicals of the T-56...but if you remove the clutch, do you also have to drain the fluid in the T-56? Reason I ask is that if you do/did, and you've done it several times, you've replaced that conventional Dexron III that many times - which is that many times more than GM recommends it. Who knows, you might have prevented failure of your T-56 by driving hard? (hey, that sort of sounds like a win-win situation to me!) <- Funny sh*t!
Dino Dexron III isn't crap, it's simply what is OE spec....but I don't see why something better, withing reason, couldn't be substituted? Of course there's debate on if anything is better than Dexron III or not, but that happens on pretty much everything on this site (and every other one like it).
Dope- I believe the part # your looking for is: 12345349.
01 SS Jay- Don't know...I remember someone saying they were running a mix (just dumped in what they had when he rebuilt his T-56) and he didn't have any problems. I'd maybe just stick to running one or the other, why take the chance, it's not that expensive...
Have a great Friday night everyone!

i use regualr dex and change it out about every 2-6k miles. i work at an express lube so its free and easy so why not lol there is no recommendation on changing the fluid but i can tell when my fluid gets old, shifting doest seem as smooth. if i were you i would just use regular dex, is cheap too. mine was changed when i got the car for the first time at 30k miles and was still red, shifting wasnt bad but was a little smoother and quicker to get in gear with new fluid

No you dont have to change your fluid when you change clutches. I changed my tranny fluid at around 45k just cause it seemed like a good idea. A lot of guys suggested I use Honda ATF as it is a good product. I decided to use what my owners manual said, and on my tranny it says use Dex III only. So I just stuck with it.BTW my 00SS tranny says Tremec and Borg Warner on it. It really has treated me very well. I probably shouldnt talk about it!Also, I should change the fluid again.
