Default TK600 or T56 Magnum

I am restoring a 1970 Nova SS and have a LS1 engine from a 2000 Camaro. I have been looking for a transmission for this project. I have read threads on both the TK600 and T56 Magnum but still not sure which one. Can anyone provide me more detail on how many additional items (ex: bellhousing) I would need to buy if I choose one of these two options?

You'll need a bell housing for either unit. Neither of them come with one brand new from Tremec. For your application, a TKO would probably fit better but the Magnum is going to be a stronger unit and give you a better shift quality.

I have an LQ4 going into a 70' Nova as well and have been saving for tranny as well. Besides what T56pro said, I havent found much on the TKO600 hydraulics. From what I have found it seems like there is an option to either use the mechanical linkage as an original 4 speed would have, or convert over to hydraulic. I am interested to see what you find out.

You would need to use a set up like McLeod offers to run a hydraulic clutch with a TKO model unit.

There are kits out there from Keisler and American Power-train to run Hydraulics on the TKO 600. The issue I can think of is mechanical on the T56 Magnum.

If you have the cash, I would go with the little more expensive Magnum. You will have to most likely trim the trans tunnel for either transmission. The Magnum is not as bad as the OEM T56. The shifter is in a better location.

When I bought my TKO 600, it was a $1000 less than the magnum, but I didn't get it because I thought the TKO would slip right in without tunnel mods....I had to chop the floor because of the oddly large square plates on top of it. I kick my self every day!!! The 2-3 shift issue is Freakin annoying!!!

The last conversion we did, we used a Quicktime bell housing with the pivot ball in it that fits the T56 Magnum. It turned out pretty slick but wasn't cheap.

I feel the T56 OEM hydraulics from an F-body is too cheap and effective to go mechanical. But I agree, Quicktime is a nice but expensive option.

So for price wise do we really need to upgrade to a magnum or tk600?
