so my 98 t/a has had 3rd gear problems since i bought it.
at first i would have to hold it into gear really hard till i was all the way out on the clutch, then it grinded everytime it went in, and now i dont have 3rd at all![Bang Head](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies/LS1Tech/gr_banghead.gif)
i thought that if i tried starting out in 3rd maybe it would go in.
but that was a no go. i have no 3rd whatsoever no matter what i try.
so my question is, im on a very very tight budget and dont have the money for a complete rebuild. the trans only has 70k miles on it so there cant be much in there thats wore out yet.
could it be the 3-4 shift fork? synchros? slider hub?
as of now my parts list is,
steel 3-4 shift fork
3-4 synchro assembly $118
t56 snap ring kit $20
t56 shim kit $30
billet 3-4 keys $55
new stock shifter pads $?? (heard bad things about the bronze pads in a dd)
how does that look??
all help is greatly appreciated!

If you had it grind a solid amount.
I had the same thing happen for reverse on mine. My reverse lockout didn't work and 3-4 aggressive mis-shifts later my reverse was completely gone. After the 2nd time it would pop out and grind occasionally, by the last time I'd have to hold it and grind. So I definitely need a new gear.

ya i would def add a 3rd gear to the list. also billet keys are cheap. i'd make sure 1-2 and 3-4 get them. the bronze pads are a mixed thing some people say they cause too much wear on the synchro collar. I have stock ones again now in mine if i had to do it over again i'd look into the tdp version which are a different type of bronze and work better or use delrin ones which are found in the vipers. also of course you get a complete synchro ring kit.
btw you say you have no 3rd gear at all? like no grinding or anything, its just not there? if so that means you probably sheared the teeth of of 3rd and you have no choice but to get another gear
