another shifting problem

if you are right how much can you get one rebuilt for and can you buy a rebuild kit yourself? not for me but my friend can rebuild anything. thanks..
I replied to the wrong one.
sounds to me that the shift fork pads or Keys in your 5-6 synchro assembly are broke.
All that is in the tail housing and could possibly done with the tranny still in the car.
Just gotta be careful.
Depending on the miles on the car. I see its a 98
I would suggest tearing it all down and puttin in a basic Rebuild kit.
you have the old Paper Blocker rings , the new ones are kevlar.

Unless you were really Crankin on that fifth gear , I dought your fork is messed up. I'm bettin its just the fork pads.
as far as the key go.
they are three metal peices in the 5-6 synchro assembly held in with spring clips.
And I was thinkin about this whole working on it while it was still in the car bit.
You would be much better off doing it out of the car.
Buy a good set of SNAP ring plyers. And pray that the 5-6 driven gear slides off.
some do. some don't .
some come off with a special puller.
and two I have had to actually split with a cut off wheel .
Keep your parts in order and don't forget a snap ring.

Not the 5-6
the 5-6 is already steel.
the 3-4 is popmetal/aluminum
they upgrade these with the Steel "viper" shift fork.
