Spec stage 3 write up
Well guys I had a stage three put in last friday and these are my opinions of the clutch.
1. The dealer told me that the install was a piece of cake. I had my stock flywheel ground. They took .010" off. Speed Inc. (where I bought it) told me to not worry about having it balanced so I didnt.
2. Picked the car up and the clutch felt exactly like my stock Z06 clutch. Little did I know this was going to change with a few heat cycles.
3. About 100 miles in my roadtrip through small towns the clutch started to chatter. I started to slip the clutch to smooth out the transitions.
4. About 300 miles the clutch started to smooth out. It was still chattering somewhat if I didnt get off the pedal soon enough.
5. About 500 miles the clutch felt the same as it did with 300 miles.
6. 500-600 miles were strictly town driving. I went to the mall and did about 10 repetative stop and go's.
7. The clutch is now feeling pretty good. The more I drive it the more the chatter goes away. One has to realize that this is a high performance clutch and it will be more aggressive.
I was scared to death to put the Spec clutch in,after reading several posts on here, but it was the best unit I could buy. I think after about another 100 miles of strictly town driving it will feel great. Speed Inc. told me that this is a great clutch and they have put hundreds of them in with only a couple of bad units.
The only thing I wished I did differently would be to drive the car strictly in town to break it in. I was heading home (4.5hrs) so I didnt have much choice.

I have a Spec 3 clutch in my ride as well. When I got it, there wasn't alot bashing it. Now, I have to wonder if I did the right thing or not. All I can say is that I LOVE IT! One must understand that this is an AGGRESIVE clutch. It is not a stock clutch. My car is a daily driver and I have put over 50k on the Spec! It still grabs as hard as day 1. The only problem is the chatter. But, like I said..."it is an AGGRESIVE clutch". I look past that issue and still love the clutch. It really shows you the horsepower and torque lost with the stock setup. I also have to bleed the clutch every so often due to the shifter being a little stiff, but otherwise it is like Christmas!

Vertigo, you mine as well replace the pilot bearing as well on your car. Prin, I know what your talking about when you "aggresive". i used to feather out my stock clutch, now i pretty much slip the clutch around 1500 rpm to make it smooth and miss the chatter. i put another 100 miles on it last night. i went to a huge parking lot and did another 10 stop-and-go's. the chatter is getting better for sure.
I dont understand why your pedal is stiff?? mine feels just like the stock unit. did you put the supplied spacer behind the hydraulic unit?

Choosing SPEC is like Russian Roulette. Only it costs more than putting a hole in your head.
SPEC Quality Control = SPEC customer service = dog poopie
PS Glad yours worked out well despite going against SPEC's own suggestion not to resurface the flywheel.
You only really know the quality of a company when an issue arrises.

vertigo, there is a spacer that comes with the kit that is about an 1/8" thick that you put behind the slave unit. i would have spec send you one. shouldnt cost more than $15.
