Default leaky rear seal on T-56, common problem?

i was told by a trans shop that some of the Yokes on these cars have a "vent hole" on them.. which causes the rear seal to leak. He told me that what they do to solve the problem is fill the hole up, because its not needed since there is already a vent on the T-56..

has anyone had experience with this or know what im talking about? i dont want to screw up this trans.. its new

Never heard of a T56 trans leaking unless the rubber boot is not sealing around the drive shaft properly.. Did you change that rubber boot? Is that where it's leaking?

yeah its leaking from that rubber boot to the yoke.. the trans is brand new, because the last one burnt up because of this rear leak.. this trans has about 1500 miles on it.. and i have a silver dollar patch size on the driveway from the leak.. i got under the car and its leaking from there..

1 of 2 problems... Replace the rubber boot on the rear of the trans.. Does not fix the problem.. Then the driveshaft is not thick enough to make a proper seal around the rubber boot..

Look inside the yoke for wear to the splines. If you have too much wear, the yoke will move too much for the seal to work. Yokes are not hardened steel. It may have been the yoke fit that took out your first trans. Do you have vibration? There should be no scoring of the outer yoke surface either.

The rear bushing can also cause this if it wasn't replaced. It allows the driveshaft to move around enough to wear the seal.

I also changed 2 seals but I used the Auto zone replacement seal. $1.98 compared to 60 and Then found that the bushing walked out. I tapped it back in all teh way and tehn pinged it to hold it in there locked. Has been fine since.

What seal are you using?? I would get the GM seal. It is WAY different than the aftermarket. There is a big rubber shroud around it. My rebuild kit came with a cheap aftermarket seal. I tossed that and got the GM one.

I had 113k at the rebuild. It did not leak before and does not leak now.

Good Luck
