Unhappy Clunking Tranny after Dyno... Gear Slack?

Well on Friday my car was strapped up to the dyno and we made about 10 pulls. On the drive home the tranny was making a horrible banging/clunking sound that can be heard coming up through the center console and the shifter. At cruise if I let off the throttle it will make a audible and feelable clunk. Then when I get back on the throttle, it will clunk again and the car will lurch forward. It really feels as if there is a lot of slack in the gears, and the clunking is just when the slack is worked out. The thing is that the tranny was NEVER this loud, it sounds like my tranny is about to fall out or I'm dropping gears all over the road.

Thanks for any help or ideas.

That sounds very typical of a torn tranny mount. Cheap/easy to replace.

I checked the mount and it is fine. Could a bad clutch cause this kind of noise? I kind of doubt it but the clutch has never slipped until we threw it on the dyno.

the mount could still be bad, a lot of time it is a bunch of small tears all over the mount and are pretty hard to notice, did u check with a light or just give it a quick 'looksie?'

and also, were you there when the car was dynoed and did u watch the guy do it? to know if something happend that might have caused this?

black00TA, I did watch, no rough housing that I could see. He did take the car our for a spin to check driveability but I don't think he would have romped it. He was just checking for part throttle driveability. I gave the mount a quick "looksie." Didnt inspect it but I will definitly get in there and spend more than 20 seconds looking at it.

8-Pack, The TA mounts are not broken.

MeentSS02, What is a tailshaft?

Thanks for the help and ideas!

Hey Mike

Let me guess this would happen when you were comming to a stop or in a slow decell?

Did they make any adjustments to your tune for you procharger?

I would get the same thing when I was tuning for my procharger as well, and then would reinstall the previous tune and go from there and all would be fine.

I am by no means a tunner but just was I have delt with as well.

It is only really noticible on the freeway when I blip the throttle. Sometimes on deceleration from high speeds you can hear it too. I don't know what it would have to do with tuning.

tailshaft I think he means the output shaft of the tranny, its what the driveshaft slides onto. clunding does sound really weird, maybe get under there and try to turn by hand and listen carefully to see whats up.

Yeah...the housing around the tranny output shaft where the torque arm mounts to in its stock location. They have been known to break on the dyno...just something to keep in mind. If it cracked, you'd probably have known it though as I don't think there would be much fluid left.
