The concept is making the revs match the desired rpm's in the gear you're shifting into. So if you're taking the car out of 1st at X MPH which is say 3500 RPM, well, second gear at the same speed calls for fewer RPM's, let's say 2700. So by quickly matching the revs to 2700 at X speed, the lever should effortlessly slide into second because it doesn't need the clutch to be dissengaged.

You cannot powershift a stock trans without using the clutch. You wont be able to get it out of gear unless you let off the gas.

There is a lot of advice be given out on how to destroy your trans. Probably a troll.

Powershifting is simple. Never let off the gas pedal. Hold it to the floor the entire time. When its time to shift have some pressure on the shifter aimed for the next gear and stab the clutch with your foot. Hopefully by the time you let out the clutch it will be in the next gear. Thats how you powershift.

btw powershifting is pointless with a stock clutch and hydraulics. The clutch will probably slip.

The pedal will probably get stuck to the floor if you powershift. When this happpens you can forget about being able to shift quickly.

Thanks for the advice though, Ive always wondered what other techniques were. I'll probably try it like you first described by shifting at 4000.

Question: If I go to try this can I start by just practicing pulling it out of gear first with no noise? Should it go into the next gear once I can pull it out smoothly?

Dont worry, I'm not gonna try this at the track, I'll stick to "speedshifting"

if you can pull it out smoothly tap the throttle anr rev it up to what rpm it would be in 2nd,it should go right in. an good way to pratcice is to ease it into 2nd when your trying to rev match, that way the syncros will just mesh and you will hear a slight gcchchkkkksssss untill they are aligned, and then it will slide in. it will sound like to gears catching and slowing themselves down. i reccomend this over just trying to rip it in, at which point if done wrong you will hear a loud ckkkkkkaaaaaa and it wont slow the rotation down like if you tried sliding it in. it will probaly make the less scary noise if you dont do it right, but its not that bad, its the syncro hanging half enguaged untill the rotation slows to no noise and then the gears are matched to the proper speed, its basicly like when you go to put it in gear and its only halfway in.

but i do recomned doing the super fast stab the clutch to the floor speedshift technique if your racing, my way is just something good to know how to do, and eventually will learn how to do it well.

I powershift I use the clutch and never let off of the gas until after I pass the lights. I have distroyed 3 T-56's this way. I would never try it with out useing the clutch I dont think I could get one pass out of it before it broke.

I have seen what your talking about, not letting out of the gas when shifting but that was on the old 3-4 speed trans and they were proshifted. Even the best of the best could screw up now and then. Thats why Lynco developed there thransmission in the 70's. I have a T-56 Iam takeing down to liberty to have proshifted this fall for next year, and they still recomend useing the clutch shifting it. It may be possable after its done but why take a chance and break it? When I powershift if you were in my car and could not hear or feel the engine I dought you could tell when I shift except a little more pull to the rear. The front of the car doesnt drop and I have had people ask if its a auto after seeing it go down the track. If your techneak is better I hope I dont see you at the track next to me.

I have stock clutch, stock hydraulics, and I powershift. The 1-2 shift is either a real loud, hard chirp, or completely breaks loose and gets sideways. 3rd will chirp too at times, but it is hard to hear it cause it isn't as loud and your going faster, more wind noise etc, etc. That my friend is NOT slipping. Yes I am aware that the stock clutch doesn't hold as well as the aftermarket ones, but mine at 32k is still kicking ***

Of course there is an improvement man, most say at least .1 and 1-2 mph in the 1/4. That is pretty good for free. I call it the driver mod Well you still gotta launch good too though. Good luck man

I hardly post on this site cause of all this stupid advice. Dude if you want to blow up 3 trannys then try it the way these guys are doing it. Dont let up and just jam that bitch into gear. After 2 pages finally someone had the commen sense to tell you that you have to use the clutch, otherwise it just wont go in. Think about it realilistcly, if you rev up to 6k and push the clutch in still @ WOT by the time your going into the next gear you might jump 500rpms where in all reality you should have dropped 1500 or 2000 rpms, cause the engine is spinning 6500 rpms but the tranny is only going 4500rpms which in turn will drop the engine RPMS where they need to be or it will toast your clutch and the rpms will stay up, but roasting clutches dont make you go forward. Now if you do the same but let off the throttle, change gears, then stab the throttle as your enganging the clutch if all is well you will be at the proper RPM range for the selected gear and theres no crazy wear and tear on you parts. It takes practice cause you gotta be quick. Just like normal gear changes only quicker. Shifting is what makes these manual cars quick. I drug my 01 Z28 w/ only corsa catback down to a 13.0 @109 because of shifting

So you think you are a quick shifter eh? Well if you were you could do MY method of powershifting no problem whatsoever. I NEVER said anything about "jamming that bitch into gear" I SAID to use the clutch I powershift ALL the time, not every shift, but damn near everytime I am getting on it hard or racing. The revs WILL NOT go from 6K to 6500 by leaving it at WOT for a shift. I personally push in the clutch and tag the next gear at 6k for EVERY shift.....I DON'T hit the rev limiter either. If you are hitting it a bit either you are too slow, or your tach isn't keeping up so get a shift lite.

Nice times on that 1/4 run.....just imagine what it would be if YOU had powershifted...you woulda been in the 12's

Oh yeah...ever heard Rodney shift, smokin01ta on here? That is the guy that set the cam only record a while back. I guarantee you that he powershifts, and he is pretty sweet with it too.
Check out the link, here is his car setting the record, doesn't sound like he lets off to me

I have been driving for about 50 years, and I have never heard anyone call clutchless shifting powershifting. It has always been like the poster above said - speed shift is as fast as possible clutching and letting off the gas; powershift is leaving the power on while shifting - throttle on the mat. The only clutchless shifting I have ever done or seen done is with a pro shifted transmission and that includes the muscle car glory days. You may get it out of gear without a clutch with a stock T56, but you will never get it in the next gear leaving it on the mat. If you back off and speed match, you will not be fast. I agree - looks like trolls on here trying to break our trannies.

EXACTLY what Critter said. Clutchless shifting upshifting is extremely slow in these cars with a stock t-56. I know a handicapped guy that uses this method to run down the strip while he pushes the gas with a cane, VERY slow indeed...about .75-.8 seconds slower on his mustang 5.0

Clutchless shifting is solely about saving wear and tear on your leg in something with a heavy clutch--not a t-56--not fast. Yes, I know I can slap an airshifter on my cbr1100 and make it shift, but that is irrelevant to ls-1 transmissions. At first I thought most of this thread was to stupid to reply to, but I couldn't stop myself.

I didn't mention it, but I powershifted the bikes back in the day. I ran the coil feed through a microswitch under my thumb on the right handle bar. Put a little pressure on the shifter and bump the microswitch. Fast! That was before they invented air shifters

there are tiems when clutchless shifting is a neccecity, liek if your driving home, and something happens, like your master cylander blows out and your stuck w/o a clutch
shti happened to me on a pos tempo, you ahd to killth e car whever yo stopped so you could start the car in frist gear giving gas immediately, the let out into neutral and push the car int he next gear lightly till it pops in, since that happen i practice shifting like that every car i drive, tho when shifting liekt hat the car generally drops 500 or so rpm before it drops in, so its definately not a speed thing, but its a good tip to know, just in case.

I rented a FORD in Europe this summer. I wanted an automatic but they gave me a 5 speed. I power shifted it the whole time. By this I mean I shifted up and down WITHOUT using the clutch. I only used the clutch to go into and out of 1st gear!

I would never do this with my M6 becasue I own it.

Using a clutch to shift with the gas on is NOT powershifting - it is only shifting with the power on! - a huge difference....

You guys are nuts... I let off the gas, push the clutch in and slam the gas and let go of the clutch. Never once have i shifted without letting off the gas, clutch or no clutch. Nor will I. 77k on stock clutch and hydraulics and still lays rubber in second even with my granny shifting.
