GM recommends ATF III it is automatic trans fluid. A good quality ATF will work fine.

Most Dexron III ATF's are in the 7.5cSt range at 100 C.

If you look at the Amsoil (since you listed Amsoil lubes) MSDS website - presently located here - for each of those that you listed, you can see the cSt at 100 C for each of those lubes:

#1 (Amsoil ART): 7.09 cSt
#2 (Amsoil ATF): 7.48 cSt
#3 (Amsoil MTF): 9.06 cSt
#4 (Amsoil MTG): 14.73 Cst

Out of those 4, the Amsoil ART or ATF is going to be closest to the factory fill. The MTF will be close to a Synchromesh lube, as those are usually in the 9.1 cSt range. The MTG is probably going to just be too thick for use, especially when cold. Not that I'm an expert or anything, but if I had one of your cars, I certainly wouldn't use the MTG in it.

It's interesting to search for 12345349, which is GM's part number for non-Friction Modified Synchromesh. Searching over at BobIsTheOilGuy.com forum, I ran across the following threads where pgtr over there did some good research on this spec. The threads are located below:

RL D4 ATF vs Synchromesh
More pieces to the Synchomesh puzzle

The above 2 threads from over at BITOG should answer questions on weight of Synchromesh.

You could also take a long and careful read through this long going thread here: Which T56 fluid?

Hope some of this helps...

Chuck

With my 97 Borg Warner (40'000 miles) I tried a couples of fluids:

BP mineral Dexron III: I had the feeling it was notchy, good shifts.
Agip synthetic Dexron III: notchier, easy to grind (very easy!).
GM synchromesh: less notchy than the BP fluid, good but slow shifts, especially at low temperatures.

At the end I went back to the mineral Dexron III: it shifts like a dram! just a little bit notchy and it shifts fast at low temperature also.
Definetly better than Synchromesh. Strange I didin't like it before.

It could also be the rest of the Synchromesh mixed with the new fluid... is it possible that a little quantity modifies the properties of the Dexron III?

Really. I've run both and RP seemed better. What didn't you like about it?
