Back from the dead...

I have a (thee) liberty faceplated T56 in a crate. Its for a conversion that will not be done for a while.

Any update from you faceplated guys?

How many road miles are they lasting?

When rebuilding becomes necessary, what kind of $ are we looking at?

I daily drive mine but dont have enough miles on it to know about wear. I think it will depend on how good my speed matching is over time. The locker is still worse than the trans!

At first its a bit of WTF over? But after a few hundred miles, no problems. I usually put mine in 5th at stops to allow going into 1st without banging. If you time it right, at about 1-3 MPH you can engage first by clutching and going to first. Upshift is weird to get used to. Normally, you clutch BEFORE you disengage the gear. With my faceplated trans during normal/easy driving, I run up first and back of the throttle a bit then pull to neutral while simultaneously letting off the gas and then clutch and pull the next gear. After getting used to it, you wont even hear the next gear engaging most of the times. You wind up shifting to the next gear as the speed of the trans is slowing down, thereby closely speed matching the next gear selection. If you clutch before you disengage the gear, the trans will linger at a higher input shaft speed longer and
it will clunk louder when you shift. As with anything, its drive time.

Yeah, I know. I have no clue what happened to it, or where the original video clip is. I don't have it on my computer anymore :/

Hopefully 98TADRIVER will post clips when he gets his car back on the road.

As Dave said, after some practice, its really easy to drive.

Thanks for finding that video again.

I also ran across this video the other day:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...42404832&hl=en

It's not a Liberty T56, but it should give you a good idea of how a dog ring transmission shifts. This particular car is a road raced 94 RX7. The transmission is a G-Force T5 with straight cut gears. The Liberty T56 will be much quieter since it uses stock helical cut gears.

Enjoy.

Mine has been daily driven for almost 4 years and been through 1 clutch... 25k or so I guess. I shift with the clutch at part throttle and with out at full throttle...I lift when I shift...or rather breath it. It's a great mod but it maybe to violent for some.

This is in a car that runs 11.50's @ 122 and change in real street trim.

Cool thanks for the input!

I'm thinking these are ideal for the drag strip, I'm sort of concerned about downshifting on the road course. That is the intended purpose of my build. Anything to add on that?

My understaning is the pro-shifted style trans that needs deburring, and the face-plated doesn't.

Just installed my face plated T-56 in my camaro. I need drive time. Grinding the gears a little. Under power is awesome. Can't wait to see what I can do at the track. Also did the viber main shaft up grade. Did you guys have to have your drive shaft balanced after the viber upgrade and changing the yoke on the drive shaft to a 30 spline?

After a little practice you will be able to drive it without any gears grinding. Just be quick with the shift handle.

Whenever you change the slip yoke or u-joints the driveshaft should be re-balanced.

I took the car out yesterday and practiced with it. It is getting easier. It is a different animal for sure. I did notice a vibration when I drove on the highway. I am going to have it balanced.
