It is hard to believe that I started this thread more than 9 years ago! The RX7 is long gone, but I have been building a 1967 Cougar with a LS swap for about a year. The full build thread can be found here:

I got the car on the road back in June and have actually been making some changes as the summer has progressed. One of the big changes that I made was buying a dog-ring T-56 transmission. It was built my RPM and has a G-Force gear set. Gears 1-4 are face plated, while 5th and 6th gears are stock and fully synchronized.

Today I made a video just showing some driving around to demonstrate the shifting and the little extra gear noise. Enjoy...

It's a Holley digital dash that interfaces with the Holley Dominator ECU that I am using.

Are those videos with the QM 5.5" clutch?

I find that the lighter the clutch/flywheel assembly, the easier and faster a dog-ring trans will respond.

What does it take (bell housing, adapters, etc.) in order to use one of the small diameter. lightweight racing clutches (QM, Tilton, ap Racing, etc.) in these cars, and, are ANY of them at all 'streetable', or are they ALL 'on/off' switches, without exception??

There are various ways to adapt the small diameter racing clutches, however, unless it is a road racing track car, it would be a pain. The little clutches can't take the heat that is generated when street driving. Earlier in this thread I showed a 8.5" QM clutch that I used in my RX7, but that car was rarely driven on the street and it was under 3000 pounds with me in it.

A few of the more common brands now seem to use smaller diameter multiplates anyway, or at least offer them, as well as larger diameter stuff. So there isnt really any need to try and adapt a full race small diameter clutch. The products are sitting on shelves somewhere.

eg

monster seem to offer an 8.5" ( and larger diameter too if you want )



Or Mantic offer 9" or 7.25"



Spec, RPS and the other brands all seem to offer similar stuff too.

At larger diameter, the new QM clutch looks pretty nice too and with a good rating for an organic.

Specs is the lightest and the best priced. the 7.25 they offer is 20lbs with a flywheel and is 1400

Yes....well kinda yes. All the vids are with a 5.5 tilton clutch

I run a auto flex plate with a button flywheel. A 5.5 tilton clutch and a qtr master tri-lite adapter and release bearing . All that has been in the car since 07 other than replacing some clutch discs.

Little clutches handle the heat fine.....better really. Not as much to make heat and not as much to hold heat. I hot lap the **** outta the car at the track. I've ran it as much as 16-18 times in one day. I actually get bored of thrashing it and leave......lol

There is not much heat to generate in street driving ......their fine. I've got about 50k on this setup

Hard to believe that I started this thread about 12 years ago. How time flies when you're having fun.

My Cougar has been on the road for about 3 years now and I drive on an almost daily basis. In that time I have gotten pretty smooth with the ******* T56. I just made a new video, just driving around and showing basic up and down shifting.

Yea man...they're a breeze to drive once you get used to them. I put 40k miles street driving on my fp t56. I recently put my stock hurst bsck on it with a factory rubber mounted shift handle and it's super smooth and that takes almost all the hit out of the plates when you do catch one.

I have over 30K miles on the Cougar since I put it together in 2015. Still using the ******* trans and the LS7 clutch.

I just got a faceplated trans and I love it. Add a strain gauge setup and let it really rip on the shifts.
