Default What the Heck is That Skip Shift For?

What were they thinking, what is that preventing? Sometimes it does it and sometimes it doesn't. I thought it was just RPM sensitive but I guess I'm wrong. Is there something in the trans that actually blocks the gear? Where do the skip shift eliminators plug in at? I was trying to teach my wife to drive it and the dad blamed skip shift kept coming on. Thanks Brandon.

It's for gas mileage. It only does it when you don't give it much gas, because the computer assumes you're concerned about gas mileage, more than power. That's how I understand it.

The skip shift was installed on M6 cars to meet fuel economy standards. There is a solenoid on the trans that when engaged mechanically blocks second gear from being selected. You can easily eliminate this feature by plugging in a skip shift eliminator into the wiring harness under the car. It's located near the top driver's side of the trans. My gf installed one on our car and she has no mechanical experience whatsoever. Definitely a must do modification.

If you want to disable it there's a couple options, skip shift eliminator or just a resistor from radio shack. www.installuniversity.com shows both methods with pics. (!CAGS)

Mine had been disabled. I've since turned it back on because it's easier to shift 1->4 when the solenoid engages... $3.12/gallon will make you do crazy things..

What's gas milage?

Compared to what the price of fuel will be 20 years from now $3.00 per gallon is dirt cheap!!! Enjoy it now.

Oh by the way, I plan on doing the Radio Shack !cags, looks pretty easy. That darn skip shift will almost cause an accident trying to pull out into traffic

It basically kept us from paying $2000-$3000 in added gas guzzler tax by helping the car just skate by the fuel economy standards. So it's actually a good thing GM did it like that. A 15 cent resistor can basically disable it. yea!

The auto cars on the other hand got 2.73 gears. booo!

Fuel economy standards or something changed for the 04 GTO's. Manuals and auto's both got 3.40 gears. yae!

It only activates under a certain RPM, once the engine is warmed up and the throttle position is under a certain percent. So if you hold 1st a little longer you can avoid it. Just unplugging it will set a trouble code, so add a resistor to the circuit. That way the PCM will see the resistance and think the coil is still plugged in. There's no way to turn off the dash light that I'm aware of, but you soon stop noticing it.

it only comes on around 2000-2500 the only way it would cause a accident if you shift early and why would you shift early when you pull out into traffic. Just shift at 2800-3000 when you drive and it will not come on . Just my 2 cents

The owners manual ,states that when you are under 30% of throttle the shift skip will come on, i either shift early,or hammer it past 30% when i acelerate, soon to be deleted with the tips from LS1 Tech!!!!....Great site!!!!

I'm one of the few who likes the skip shift. When driving around town i only have to shift a few times and not four ANd it saves me a little $$ in gas. IMO I like it.

Yeah the thing that changed was GM caring if you pay the gas guzzler tax. '04 GTO auto's had about a $1,300.00 gas guzzler tax attached to the sticker price. The m6s met the fuel economy requirements therefore did not have the gas guzzler tax.

except it doesn't work, the real purpose is to destroy your rear end and transmission........

With the skip shift installed you will have the choice to do it your way.

If you're going slow and want to do it economically you can yourself go from first to third or fourth gear. Then you have your own option.

BTW, isn't there a way to disable it in the ECM?
