Default Skipping gears?

Is there anything wrong when driving going from 1st gear to 5th? or 1st to 4th etc?

Also when on highway lets say does it hurt transmission to drop from 6th to 3rd? Just checking. My tranny is on way to T56rebuilds right now, but when driving as it was when I would go form 6th, would grind when going down to 3rd/4th. Wasn't as bad going up but did grind sometimes.

I skip all the time helps gas; in fact thats all the skip shift does is locks out 2nd and 3rd. I usually go from 1 to third or 1, 2, then 4th. 1st to 4th is just a little too much sometimes when going up a slight hill.

I skip gears alot also. Get to speed & put it in 5th or 6th.
As for down shifting, you can overwork the syncro by trying to get intop a lower gear at high speed & low RPM. Thus a grind is the result. You can rev match that helps a ton.

Is that grind hurting anything?

Skipping gears can be ok, but any grinding noise is always bad to some degree. As was already mentioned, rev matching cuts down on clutch and transmission wear.

What exactly is rev matching?

If you upshift, you lower your engine rpms to match the speed you are at for the next higher gear. When downshifting, you raise rpms to match. This keeps the transmission from having to pull the engine up or down to match vehicle speed for the different gear. This reduces stress on every component in the drivetrain.
edit-doesn't your sig read A4?

There is nothing wrong with skipping gears. I do it all the time. I often just put in in 6th at like 35mph just to save gas. And yes rev matching will help when downshifting.

Yea skipping gears is really common, saves gas! I usually go 1-2-4-5-6 or 1-3-5-6 and usually in 6th by 45-50.

Doesnt that put a lot of stress on your clutch and engine putting it into 6th at 45? Your RPMS are ridiculously low. I pretty much only use 6th on the highway or a long road where I can just cruise. But on the street, I hit 4th, and occasionally 5th...

With stock headers and cam, 45mph in 6th is perfect. I used to love idleing all the way to work.

6th gear at 45 is right at 1000 rpms, that doesnt feel too bad, but i dont accelerate in 6th at all. If the speed limit is 45 im in 6th right at 45, if it is 55 then i am in 6th right at 55. It only feels bad when you accelerate in 6th, cruising is fine...i think
