Exclamation Transmission Jack suggestions, PLS

I'm getting ready to do my first transmission removal on my 2002 M6 TA. I've bee looking at the different transmission jacks offered by HF and Northern tools. If someone has one these, please respond with pros and cons. I found a thread stating the weight of our transmission is around 125 lbs. Thus, I don't see the need for a 1-ton tranny jack. Second question, is there a good set of ramps to drive the car up to get enough of room to do some work under there? Thanks for the information.

If you plan on doing it on ramps or jack stands you won't have much clearance for a tranny jack. I tried to use the the one from HF that bolts onto your floor jack and it was too tall to get under the car with jack stands fully extended and jack lowered all the way. Two guys can easily slide it out and install.

Ramps don't have enough room to really work under there, IMO. I'm not a big guy (6', 175 lbs), and I would not want to pull a trans from a car that's only on ramps. Not enough room to wiggle around comfortably.

That said, I have done it. I found a length of 4x4 wood, and cut 4 ~8-10 inch chunks of it. I then found some 1" thick plywood, and used wood screws to attach 2 of the 4x4 chunks to a slab of plywood. I jacked the car up, slid the ramp under the wheel, and then set the wood 'shim' on the ramp, and set the wheel down. The extra 5" of lift made all the difference in the world for 'workability'.

Keep in mind you'll probably need the car even higher to move the trans out from under it. Ramp + 5" is what I'd call minimum working height.

I now have a lift, screw the ramps

I used a motorcycle jack for mine. Worked great. The others are right though, ramps alone wont get you high enough for this.

If you can use a lift, DO IT!!! Ive pulled our tranny out 5 or 6 times on jackstands, and its not fun. It will be a whole lot quicker on a lift too.

I put the rear wheels on the ramps, and used the big 2 ton stands that go up about 24" or so under the front. That gave plenty of room to work. FWIW instead of blowing $200+ on a trans jack, I just used a regular floor jack on each end of the trans, and manipulated them both to slowly lower it. Putting it back in I had a buddy help, used 1 floor jack at the rear and he maneuvered the front into place.

I have the HF trans jack that you can crank with a 3/8 ratchet. Works great, I have pulled the TH400 out of the car and put it back in multiple times. I can R&R the trans in under 2.5 hours.

I agree it is definately a BEAR to remove using jack stand, a HF tranny jack, and one person. Just got the tranny out this evening. Will finish the removal of the bell housing, pp, clutch tomorrow eve after work. Definately dreading the reverse procedure. LOL

I benched mine in and out myself. I did it on the ground with ramps and jack stands.
