Default Popping out of gear

Happens only in 3rd gear. I put the shifter into 3rd...hit the gas...pops out into neutral. It drives fine if i hold it in 3rd. But if i let go...it pops out. Any ideas?

My third was poping out and reverse was poping out as well. Got a synchros kit and Steel 3-4 fork. All fixed now.
The reverse was due to the fact that the the hat on one side of the fork was broken.

Unfortunatly I don't remember the cost it's been 2 years already.

I think the 3-4 fork was about $60 and the synchro kit was about $200. I replaced all the snap rings in it as well but it aint necessary

I've got the same problem. I just don't use third at all anymore. What's strange is that when I'm racing, it doesn't pop out. Only on light acceleration during normal city driving. It's pretty embarassing because it sounds either like I don't know how to drive stick or that I'm rompin on whoever is around me. lol I've had that problem for about 2 years now. Just waiting for tranny to take a dump so I can fix the entire thing at the same time.

--disclaimer-- if anybody is thinking about this repair, this is for parts only. if you've never rebuilt a transmission, think twice about it. you better have good mechanical aptitude, and/or a polaroid camera with plenty of film.. imho.

ps. 3rd gear goes out first on most cars that see hard acceleration. the mph span is greater on 2-3 than 1-2 (i.e. mph at a given rpm), the tires don't cushion the blow as much(through wheelspin), and how many more times have you beat the hell out of 2-3 than 4-5? there's all sorts more reasons... i have seen it on the hondas and nissans also..

LOL

You are correct. I remember when I had mine apart in the basement, there were quite a bit of parts on the table. And yes, this was for parts only.
This is mine when I got to the 1-2 and 3-4 shifts. (Bootom parts)

It's not that bad. I think the tranny is only about 115-120 LBS dry.

I had to bring it to a place which was well lit and better height to work with. My garage at that time didn't had a workbench.

ugh that sounds too much like work.. i'm trying to diag code 45-injector leak on my 240 right now.. theres no ck valve in the line, all my injectors ohm'ed alike so i'm going to load the fuel rail w chemtool and lift the coil wireto blow some through.. i couldn't get them to pulse with a aa battery, and i think 9v is too much, i don't want to fry them.. any thoughts? if i cant clear the code i'm going to try my press. reg. next, b4 i have to buy injectors. they seem fine. hope it's not a pcm deal.....
