Default T-56 Rebuilds...What did you pay

Mine is making some funky noises. It might be a bad throwout bearing, however, I need to be prepared for the worst. Speed Inc. quoted me $1300, FLP quoted $1795 for just the rebuild, no installation . A local drivetrain shop that comes highly recommended told me $900-$1000 including the steel shift fork and carbon fiber blocking rings, installed. What is the deal with the FLP and why so much. I know they have a good rep but $800 for a name??????

Thanks for the info. So if labor is around lets say $450-$600, that means that there is a spread of $450 to $1200 dollars for the same parts installed by these 3 different shops. That doesn't sound right. The other thing to consider is that the local drivetrain specialist will pull and reinstall the trans for $900-$1000. I get back to my point that there is an enormous difference in price for the same job and parts.

Just got mine back from bieng rebuilt. I had a new 2nd gear put in, CF syncros and 3-4 steel shift fork. I should have replaced the 1-2 slider, cause it was just a little worn, but it was 600 through GM.

Total labor for pulling and rebuilding the tranny $200. 2nd Gear $286, CF syncros $229, Fork $49.

Total rebuild - $764

The book says four hours to rebuild the tranny (outside of car).

I paid about $600 for mine. I did all the labor myself, tho. $150 for 2nd gear, $150 for the 1-2 slider gear and $229 for the synchro kit, plus misc stuff like fluid, cleaning supplies, and whatnot. Parts were all from http://www.ddperformance.com Wasn't terribly difficult. A few hand tools, snap ring pliers, and a press with a bearing splitter is all you need.

And a manual helps too. My 94 Helm provided guidance.

Pistoles Transmissions here in austin, tx charges $286 for rebuild on t-56's; that includes replacing syncros, sliders, forks for 1st thru 4th. the r&r is up to you though. not sure how they replace everything for so cheap, but thier workmanship has proven itself for the past 8 months.

ak motorsports, do you have a phone number for this place that did your trans? Do they have a lot of T56 experience? My T56 is giving me trouble when downshifting only to 2nd gear. It will allow the downshift to second somtimes(very notchy), then there are times I can pull as hard as I want and it won't go in at all, unless I slow way down and shift to 1st then to 2nd. It upshifts fine so I think its a slider/blocker or something

I had mine completely re-built by D&D. Don't recall off-hand the exact cost, but it was a lot closer to $1300 than $1800.

Give them a call and ask for Steve. 248-735-6220

TTT, How long did it take to get the rebuild done? Mine looks to be on it's way out. I'd rather race prep mine than get it rebuilt stock.

Needed mine done quick. Local dealership $2400 - had to replace all syncro's, 3/4 shift fork, 3rd gear, input shaft, etc, etc. That included taking out, fixing, re-install. It works great but oooooch

Paying more doesn't mean it will get done right either. Try to find someone VERY familiar with the T56 befor going in to it.

I had mine rebuilt under warranty a while back. Which is cool, but what's not cool is it's going out again. It's starting to jump out of third again. I'm going to try to have it done again by them just to get me down the road for a little bit longer. Even if that happens, I'm sure it will go out again and by that time hopefully I can find someone to do it the right way for less than my right arm.
