Default PRO 5.0 NOISE?

i've had a pro 5.0 shifter on my 2000 ta for about 8 months now. since i've had this shifter, there has been a lot of noise from it, specifically a light scraping noise when the car is in gear and moving. lately it sounds like a bell is ringing under hard acceleration. i'm wondering, are these the sounds of my transmission dying? or just the norm with the pro 5.0? btw, i trimmed my rubber shift boot to clear the shifter stop ring, per pro 5.0. i know this lets a lot of noise in.

Make sure you take the the small boot out, and cut a bigger hole in the big boot. The big boot should then fit under the stop ring, leaving the stop ring and everything else up from there exposed.

I dont know about bells, but its normal to make a grinding sound in gear at low rpms and mine whines a little when you get on the gas. No biggie.

When I first put mine in I used a rubberized gasket material instead of RTV and it was as quiet as stock. Now I changed my clutch and used RTV and it's whiney/grindy as described above. The 'bell' sound will be a loose stop bolt or handle bolt if you pull the boot off and check I bet.

yeah, i've done all those things minus using a rubber gasket. i guess the noise just goes with the territory. maybe i'll look into the gasket. btw, does anyone know what kind of grease is used in the shifter base?

I had the gasket leftover from a job at work. I'll check at a hardware store and see what it's called. It real nice cause it's self adhesive on one side. It's almost like weather stripping only not as pourus.

I installed my Pro about six months ago. I also just did a clutch change. When I pulled the shifter out, I noticed that the grease inside where the stick is which was once white is now BLACK. Is that normal? For some reason it must be getting a lot of dirt in there someway. It didn't seem dirty though, it was just black, like it had been burned.

Where did you get that rubberized gasket Blur? When I first installed mine I left the boot uncut and it was almost as quiet as stock. After the clutch install I went ahead and cut the hole in the top of the boot (I don't know why) and now it is Loud as hell! A new boot is like $34 from GM! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" />
Also, did anyone have any clearance issues with the Pro touching the bottom of the center console? My console sits ON my shifter and it rattles like crazy above 2500 rpm. Ive installed about five pros and they've all had at least 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch of clearance..??

How about a piece of dynomat to help with the noise? Say a rectangular piece with a slot cut in the middle. Slip it over the stick and just let it lay on top of the boot. Whadya think?

I have some noise with my Pro 5.0 too but it's not all that bad. They say placing a pair of thin rubber washers between the stick and the shifter helps with a lot of the noise.

As to hitting the console mine doesn't come close.
