Default T56 temperature while racing..

Anyone else have a trans temp gauge on their T56? I put one in place of my drain plug.

I was curious to see if anyone else is doing this too. Reason being because i road race, and i wanted to keep an eye on the temps.

BUT.. i dont know what is safe temp range, and what is bad..

on a normal day, city driving.. it never gets above 110*.. now while road racing .. doing 20min sessions... ive seen it climb to 170*-190* at max...

im using an autometer electric Ultra-lite 100-250* gauge.

So any input from Joe or Amber at T56rebuilds? Or anyone else know what is the max temp?

thanks

If you are using ATF the oil guys don't want too much above 250f temps. The oil breaks down rapidly when run more than that. I think the T56 max . temp is 300 F. Seals a plastic bits don't fare well above that temp.

So just how do you expect to pump oil through it then. A manual transmission doesn't have a pump

Gm part number for manual trans cooler kit with pump etc. 12480080. It is designed for corvettes. You can also but aftermarket rearend, manual trans, or oil cooler kits.

wow. thats an expensive kit. MSRP is $1266. GMPD price is $921.

Piecing it together adds up to about $650 from GMPD. I still think you can find aftermarket kits for much lower cost.

I don't know of any aftermarket kits, but assembling one with a pump, cooler and lines shouldn't be too hard. The hardest part is figuring out where to mount it. You can use the fill hole for the return.

there are a lot of alternative pumps that will handle the job instead of the GM one.

Dex.,. you're not too bright about things are you? Thinking you're funny and have the answers and we are stupid for putting a trans cooler on a manual.. racing teams have done these for years. Get a clue before you post.

They also run differential coolers as well... care to make fun of those too? So long as you have a drain and fill plug you can run a cooler on most any thing..

Anyways.. thank you guys who posted actualy information.

If it was not for road racing I would say leave it alone. But when you get into that kind of stuff, everything that has fluid and doesnt have a specifc way of cooling it, needs it. From engine oil coolers, P/S pump cooler, and even rear diff coolers. I would suspect the price is high as many people do not need them.

I do road course driving as well. IMO, if she's under 200*F, I'd leave it alone. I use an oil cooler for engine oil, of which is very important. Engine oil can get above 300*F without an oil cooler, which is high even for 20W-50 racing oils. Front brake ducts will add life to front brake pads & wheel bearings, as well. If you don't have a PS cooler, add one. Otherwise, you probably have noticed it bubbling out of the reservoir.

Back the original question; Redline-D4 was recommended to me by a fellow member & have had it in the tranny now for (4) 3 to 4 20 minute road course sessions, each time, without issue. My tranny never gets above 187*F. Rear differential carrier, Shaeffers 267 80W-90 has never let me down. Again, I cannot speak to sessions longer than 20 minutes. From what I've read here, the guys who door to door race for longer periods of time, use tranny coolers. Hope this helps.
